"Due to our being champions", is a false point that a few of you want to believe. I have, and will continue, to state that every season we have no more than four games on the schedule which should be competitive and to add more non-competitive games is not entertaining for me and others who are not diehard JMU fans but like to watch a good football game. My father is case in point, though he no longer can attend games, the only home ones he was interested in were W&M, RU, Nova, maybe UD or UNH. You guys only look at JMU though purple glasses and rarely put yourself in the position of an outsider to the program.

To channel Steve Martin, excusssseee me! Who do we think we are? How self-centered! Looking at JMU's scheduling purely from the viewpoint of a JMU fan's perspective and thinking it's fine.03-pissed Shameful. We should be embarrassed for thinking about JMU's needs first, and thru purple lenses no less! It's the height of homer arrogance! Just think...JMU is not only missing out on building JMU's popularity among that vast population of aging fathers who can no longer attend games, JMU's is failing to follow up its NC season with a schedule that pleases the "diehard" FB crowd. How is JMU FB ever going to displace the Dallas Cowboys as "America's Team" if JMU FB doesn't start scheduling "good football games" for non-JMU fans?

03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

That's right, I think big. I have some Clemson buddies who are watching us, but as soon as we make the trip to Norfolk next year, I'm pretty sure their interest will wavier.

I have a friend who lives in Waynesboro. What is it, 30 minutes away. The guy loves football and he's not some backwoods redneck, but going to a JMU/Towson, Elon, or Albany (much less NSU, MSU, or CCSU) game is not his idea of a good way to spend a Saturday. I would love to see our stands with 10% of the people who have no connection to JMU and don't live in the greater Harrisonburg / Rockingham County.

When young, my father often took me to games at Wake, NC State and Tech. Living in southern VA, he had many friends attached to those schools and all were less than a two hour drive. I would like to see people showing up from Richmond, Roanoke, and Winchester to see the Dukes with the decision being of their making, not because a JMU alumni has invited them, or they have a daughter going to JMU. This will not happen unless we change our thoughts on scheduling. They want to see a good football game with the Dukes kicking a FG in the final minute to win. This will have them returning and purchasing a lot of purple.

Nothing wrong with dreaming, but your idea of having 10% of the stands filled with people with no connection to JMU is absurd. For starters, why should that be a goal (for any program, much less JMU)?

Secondly, your definition of a "good game" by equating it to a last minute winning FG has little to do with scheduling. Closely contested games are a matter of game play, and JMU fans had more than their fair share of closely contested games (even against the so-called cupcakes) under MM. No thanks. A good game for me is the Dukes playing error free ball and up to their full potential and winning, no matter what the final score.

We clearly have a different idea of what a good game is for those who don't have any skin involved. You clearly have stated what it is to you. I'm trying my very best to think beyond the established JMU base.

I have a busy schedule, and "time" is precious. Because my professional life keeps me plenty busy, I don't have time (or "skin" if your prefer) to invest in college GAMES beyond those that may involve the Dukes. So, you're absolutely correct that I couldn't care less what some Clemson fan thinks of JMU football, and I'm sure the straw-man Clemson fan (as a metaphor representing all other FBS college fans) could care less about the fact I don't give a rat's tail about their teams.

I also can't remember the last time we had a decent team for our home opener :-)

I think given last season's results I will choose to stick with the current scheduling formula.

ditto. I have an absolute blast at the home opener, it's sad for fans that can't enjoy it. they're entitled to their opinion, it just sucks for them. It's a great day to tailgate.

FIFY

nnnnnnnnnnooo, i have a great time at the game, too. as i said, it's sad that other fans can't find the fun in it. i feel sorry for those fans.

NSU was down 10-0 at halftime when they visited UR last year.

While neither game represents a marquee opponent, both schools present a greater challenge then last years two out of conference opponents and are not cupcakes in the FCS world. The issue is JMU is the national champ so any one outside of the top 10 is going to feel like a cupcake to fans.

Yeah, I was wrong to say ETSU would be a cupcake. Last year maybe. Last year in their 2nd year of football since re starting the program they were 5-6, 3-6 vs I-AA, but did upset playoff Samford the last game of the season. I looked at their game notes from that game and among their 46 listed 2 deep only 3 seniors.
23 Starters:
-3 Sr (1 a GR)
-2 JR
-13 SO
-5 rFr

23 2nd team:
-0 Sr
-4 Jr
-9 So
-10 Fr/rFr

Last time JMU played a 3rd year startup while ranked #1 the year after winning the NC it didn't go so well. Of course that CCU team had future NFL players at QB (Tyler
Thigpen), WR (Jermone Simpson) and FB (Mike Tolbert).

Last 3 times JMU played a program in their 3rd year of varsity football:
-2005 lost @ CCU 31-27
-2011 lost @ ODU 23-20
-2011 w GST 28-21 (JMU gave up 2 TDs late in the 4th).

One thing that worries me a little is that if JMU can pull the sleight upset @ ECU there is the potential for a letdown the following week vs what could be a decent ETSU team..

We won't lose to ETSU. I think etsu has a combined six wins in their first two seasons?

How many wins did odu and ccu have in their first two seasons. I think that'll tell that tale.
I'm also sure etsu doesn't have the recruiting advantages that the other two coastal schools have. Their location and lack of a true facility so far (I believe) isn't doing them any favors.

And Elon was only down 6-0 at the half to RU. NSU might not be a cupcake but are close. Yeah they only trailed RU by 10 at the half last year. That was the week after RU had their big win over UVA, so probably was a 1st half letdown...

NSU last year was 4-7, 3-7 vs I-AA. 10 game vs I-AA their offense was bad, avg only 15+ ppg. vs 3 playoff teams:
L @ RU 34-0
L @ W&M 35-10
L @ NC A&T 35-0

I wish this game was the home opener after ECU, because I think NSU will be a much easier opponent than ETSU..Vs ETSU there at least exists the remote possibility of a loss after post ECU win letdown. There would be virtually 0 chance of that vs NSU..

There are high expectations for this team next year. It will be interesting to see how they handle being "the man" among the FCS world. No game will be easy as every team they play will want to knock them off so they can say they beat the champs.

I place their program at about the same level as Lehigh and Lafayette. Not considered a cupcake but about the level we should drop down to in playing one OOC game in a season, certainly not NSU. One of the very biggest reasons to not be playing NSU is the same reason given in not accepting a SB bid, the requirements for acceptance is too far removed from JMU.

7 wins their 1st 2 seasons- I was wrong above when I said they were 4-7 last season/2-7 vs I-AA. Looking again they were 5-6/3-6.

Only partially. Comparing the respective 2nd year schedules:
2004 CCU: 5 at most full scholly I-AA/0 playoff teams (played 3 non scholly Pioneer/3 Div II
2010 ODU : 7 at most full scholly I-AA/0 playoff teams (played 2 non scholly Pioneer, NEC at the time Monmouth, & 1st year GST).
2016 ETSU: 9 full scholly I-AA/4 playoff teams.

Their new stadium:
http://www.etsustadium.com
http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/Football...e-progress

JMU will be ETSU's 'I-A game' next season so to speak. Looking at their schedule I could see them being 4-4 or 5-3 in he So-Con, 6-5 or 7-4 overall. At a minimum they'll be better than NSU, URI, and Elon.
