RE: 2017 Football Schedule Game Times
ETSU is a So Con team. The So Con historically has produced some good competition in the FCS world. They just revitalized their program a few years ago so perhaps they are not what they will be just yet but I am not writing this off as a cupcake game just yet. I do know if we were talking basketball we would not refer to them as cupcakes.

NSU was down 10-0 at halftime when they visited UR last year.

While neither game represents a marquee opponent, both schools present a greater challenge then last years two out of conference opponents and are not cupcakes in the FCS world. The issue is JMU is the national champ so any one outside of the top 10 is going to feel like a cupcake to fans.

Ding ding ding. Great last point. When you're the national champs, only ranked teams are "meaningful" at this point.

Yep and ranked teams who have a chance of making the playoffs as an at large don't want to play at JMU if they want to play JMU at all.

Nation, I've preached the competition thing when we had barely over a .500 season under MM. "Due to our being champions", is a false point that a few of you want to believe. I have, and will continue, to state that every season we have no more than four games on the schedule which should be competitive and to add more non-competitive games is not entertaining for me and others who are not diehard JMU fans but like to watch a good football game. My father is case in point, though he no longer can attend games, the only home ones he was interested in were W&M, RU, Nova, maybe UD or UNH. You guys only look at JMU though purple glasses and rarely put yourself in the position of an outsider to the program.

To channel Steve Martin, excusssseee me! Who do we think we are? How self-centered! Looking at JMU's scheduling purely from the viewpoint of a JMU fan's perspective and thinking it's fine.03-pissed Shameful. We should be embarrassed for thinking about JMU's needs first, and thru purple lenses no less! It's the height of homer arrogance! Just think...JMU is not only missing out on building JMU's popularity among that vast population of aging fathers who can no longer attend games, JMU's is failing to follow up its NC season with a schedule that pleases the "diehard" FB crowd. How is JMU FB ever going to displace the Dallas Cowboys as "America's Team" if JMU FB doesn't start scheduling "good football games" for non-JMU fans?

That's right, I think big. I have some Clemson buddies who are watching us, but as soon as we make the trip to Norfolk next year, I'm pretty sure their interest will wavier.

I have a friend who lives in Waynesboro. What is it, 30 minutes away. The guy loves football and he's not some backwoods redneck, but going to a JMU/Towson, Elon, or Albany (much less NSU, MSU, or CCSU) game is not his idea of a good way to spend a Saturday. I would love to see our stands with 10% of the people who have no connection to JMU and don't live in the greater Harrisonburg / Rockingham County.

When young, my father often took me to games at Wake, NC State and Tech. Living in southern VA, he had many friends attached to those schools and all were less than a two hour drive. I would like to see people showing up from Richmond, Roanoke, and Winchester to see the Dukes with the decision being of their making, not because a JMU alumni has invited them, or they have a daughter going to JMU. This will not happen unless we change our thoughts on scheduling. They want to see a good football game with the Dukes kicking a FG in the final minute to win. This will have them returning and purchasing a lot of purple.

Nothing wrong with dreaming, but your idea of having 10% of the stands filled with people with no connection to JMU is absurd. For starters, why should that be a goal (for any program, much less JMU)?

Secondly, your definition of a "good game" by equating it to a last minute winning FG has little to do with scheduling. Closely contested games are a matter of game play, and JMU fans had more than their fair share of closely contested games (even against the so-called cupcakes) under MM. No thanks. A good game for me is the Dukes playing error free ball and up to their full potential and winning, no matter what the final score.

We clearly have a different idea of what a good game is for those who don't have any skin involved. You clearly have stated what it is to you. I'm trying my very best to think beyond the established JMU base.

I think you missed my point. Like you, I would like to see competitive games at JMU. 50-7 blow outs are boring. The issue JMU has is that playoff caliber teams are not likely to come to JMU. We can chastise the AD, coach and anyone else for poor scheduling but the reality is that they can't make good teams come to JMU beyond our home conference schedule. Thank God we are in the CAA. Can you imagine what we would have is we were in the Patriot or Big South?

I think you worry too much about the non-JMU fans perception of our program. We are not P5 and if you are not P5 then you are not big time D1 football. It is that simple. People can try to fluff up the G5 all they want but at the end of the day, the G5 is no better than JMU football.

I find it difficult to believe Montana, Montana State, NDSU, Jacksonville State, Northern Iowa wouldn't do a two game home and home deal with us. I also think that if we would think outside of the box a little and ask UNH, Nova, and UD for a home and home the years we don't have them scheduled for a conference game, makes a lot of sense as well. I'd certainly rather see UNH than CCSU, Nova over MSU, UD versus NSU. I realize this means there will be about one-third of the seasons with only five home games. You are absolutely correct in that I concern myself over the non-JMU fan perception of the Dukes.

Regarding your second paragraph, if we are trying to compare ourselves to GA State, then you are correct G5 is no better. I find it difficult to believe that Coastal will be a good comparison either. Those programs didn't have fans prior to making a move to FBS and should not be there. But this is fact, people from Charlotte go to Boone in the fall to watch Appy who have no ties to the school. Granted, they have had a powerful football program forever. That is about as far (two hours) as I would expect people to take a day to go watch G5 football who have no ties. They are not going to tailgate and are not going to get a hotel room. Non-affiliated football fans will travel much further and spend a lot more to watch Tech and that's not what I'm driving towards. I want us to be all that we can be and have our boys playing in front of a packed house full of four quarters of screaming fans. To be perfectly honest, I don't even care if all the fans are JMU fans, it makes for a better experience to have some opposition sitting in the stands.
