If I could give back I would. I'm 26 now living in Richmond and I'm still working on a career. Once I pay things I have enough money just for me to semi enjoy life. Lol give me about 5 years. I'm sad. The last odu football game I went to was when we beat la tech..

Again, even $5 makes a difference. If we had 1000 new alumni commit to $5 each year we would see ODUs reputation increase.

That's where ECU's Pirate Club does it 10000% correct. They are a stellar model.

The school should or could go the NPR route. A gift a X level of donation.

Personally I feel that they dropped the ball by not giving something to the folks that bought tickets to the bowl game or the season ticket holders. A car sticker or yard sign would serve double duty by also advertising for the school.

As for big donars. How many or who are ODU grads that have given to ODU?

Strom gave a good chunk but it was with money he earned thanks to his master's degree education from a different instutiin that put him in that situation.

I might be wrong but I think the dollar tree folks are not ODU grads either correct?

I know a few ODU millionaires (A club I am not in). I don't thank any donate to the University though.

Browse http://ecupirateclub.com/.

They have students getting involved long before graduation. Just browsing their page it's obvious they're engaged. All my ECU friends are proud to say they're Pirates and have been for x years. Even if it's 50 bucks a year.

We're getting there I feel but they're light years ahead.

I'm not sure if anyone has seen it but a few days ago the ODU twitter put out a tweet asking students if they wanted to be part of a marketing photo shoot going on today and tomorrow.

RE: Richmond firm to help ODU with branding and marketing
I found this interesting and I hope it doesn't dive too far into the deep end from this video but I find it is what we should and are focused on as a University and related to branding and marketing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGkQil14LPQ when I watched this I couldn't help but think of the fiasco going on at Evergreen College.

I am proud to hang my hat on the idea that we are a STEaM University. I put the A in lower case because I feel that's something we're growing and I like that. But we bring true value and growth/change to the world through our curriculum. The old joke about underwater basket weaving and the movie PCU doesn't hold true with ODU. If you never watched PCU I suggest it, I thought that's how my college life would be but I'm glad it wasn't even close. =]

Hopefully this will lead ODU to loosening up their licensing so Monarch fans everywhere can purchase all kinds of Monarch Merchandise.

Was on the Outer Banks last week and in a store that had lots of college stuff. Of course there was no ODU merchandise. But there was some Christopher Newport stuff. What's wrong with this picture?

I was in Park City, Utah last week in a shop called "sock city". They had socks for just about any organization. I even saw socks for UNCW, App State and UNC-Charlotte, but ODU? Nope, nada, nyet.

Thats jacked up. We're the closest D1 school to the outer banks. CNU? Seriously? One fifth the size, half as old and D3?!?! ODU should be quite prominent down there. I used to frequent a restaurant near Rodanthe that had the old ODU player signage from the halls of Scope up on their walls. Not sure if its there any more, but it was pretty cool. The marketing people should visit the OBX with 50 house flags, stickers etc and go from bar to bar to restaurant giving stuff away to any place that will hang it.

This is spot on

I agree, but I do think more would give if they realized how it helps the university out. The percentage of alumni giving is just as important, if not more important, than the amount given. If we could get alumni giving up to 10-15%, even if just a dollar, it would significantly help our ranking.

As a recent grad, I was getting calls to donate within a month of graduating and continue to get them once every 4 months or so. The first time they called, I asked them the minimum and they said $50. I donated and have continued to donate to the business school and nursing program. However, there are a lot of graduates that are still looking for work or are underemployed at that point. Going for the $50 minimum donation seems like a missed opportunity.

Having worked in higher ed my whole life, it isn't how much you donate, it is the percentage of alumni who donate that is important. Not only does that play into national rankings, it also is an important part of accreditation reviews. So even if you only donate 25.00 or 50.00 a year to the annual fund, it is worth it to do so.

This is EXACTLY right and is what ODU desperately needs. A larger donor base period. This is the ECU model. A large number of donors giving a smaller donation. That's a stronger model than a small number of donors giving larger donations. We need more people giving $100 to $400 a year.

One thing I think we do wrong is Old Dominion Sports Properties. This is not a non-profit organization. From what someone explained to me: they have total control on broadcast rights and access to ODU on TV, the Web and Radio. Yes they give money to the school but they also pay dividends to their owners/principles. I feel this is a waste of money. Rights fees that should be going to ODU gets siphoned off to people not really associated with ODU. Not sure how other schools do this, but at my core I do not like this arrangement.

Yea I don't disagree with that. I don't know how much we actually get in the deal. I would guess we probably save on some university resources by outsourcing for this service, but I'm so not impressed with the outcome. They have 100% licensing and control of our production, which limits any flexibility and/or innovation we need to deal with the new normal.

Someone should be pushing for better exposure and results...either the University, its constituents, or both.
