2017 College FB Magazines
The first CFB mag is out and on the newstands. Street and Smiths. It is a magazine that is what I'd call "improving" since it is trying to spike up its content. Its not as accurate as Phil Steele, but most of it makes sense and it doesn't relegate the AAC to the back pages. I also like the space it gives to the FCS schools which are left out of a lot of publications. So when an FBS school "plays down" the fans can get a little info on that opponent.

So here is the Street and Smiths AAC predictions:

West
1. Navy
2. Tulsa
3. Houston
4. Memphis
5 SMU
6. Tulane

East
1. USF
2. UCF
3. Temple
4. ECU
5. UCONN
6. Cincinnati

I assume the west was a crap shoot among the top 4 teams and Navy won the throw. I am a little surprised that TU is picked over Houston and that might reflect the UH coaching change.
I think the "east" is pretty much what I'd select with the slight exception that UC should probably be a little higher.

I recommmend this magazine and its reasonably priced at $8, is on the shelves now and available at places like WalMart.

BTW Phil Steele - always my favorite - should be out later on in mid-June. 02-13-banana04-cheers05-stirthepot

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
I think both divisions will be competitive, which is always good and something you can't say about all conferences. I think there are several question marks about Navy, TU, Houston and Memphis so it could be very interesting to see how it plays out. It looks funny to see UC picked at the bottom of their division.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
What I'll try to do is collect all the CFB magazines I can, and compile all the data into a composite. Lindy's, Phil Steele, Athlon etc are what I usually collect. Its just a hobby.

I think Cincy is low because they had a poor season last year, a coaching change, and a lot of question marks coming in. But its hard to visualize them being last in the east. I'm not as concerned with them now since we don't play them (unless its for the AAC Championship). But we have a challenging schedule ahead with 9 bowl teams on the schedule and for the first time I can remember, playing all (6) at home that were in bowls.

Also, USF is rated #23 nationally and Houston's Ed Oliver - just a sophomore - is listed as a first team All American Def Lineman. TU is mentioned as THE "Team On The Rise" in the AAC (Cincy was listed as a team "On the Wane".) D'Angelo Brewer was the "most elusive" runner in the conf and is first team AAC as are O-linemen Plagg, Bowling and Miller. Our defense doesn't get much love.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
Lindy's is out and it usually doesn't quite pass the test I set for a CFB magazine I'd recommend. There is a lot of trash in it that just seems to trivialize the upcoming season. The craziest is a section devoted to actors who portrayed CFB coaches/players. Adam Sandler in the "Waterboy" has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming CFB season. Others were Sean Astin - Rudy, Pat O'Brien - Knute Rockne, Tom Berenger - Bear Bryant, even Groucho Marx from "Horse Feathers" way back in the 1930's. Now folks, that has nothing to do with the 2017-18 CFB season.

On the positive side they pick USF #17 preseason. The only other non-BCS team mentioned is Boise St at #24. Also only one non-BCS player was mentioned as an All-American (second team) - an OLineman (Will Hernandez from UTEP). That shows a lack of knowledge and perception that can't be denied.

The (Lindy's) AAC Predictions

East -
1. USF
2. UCF
3. Temple
4. Cincinnati
5. ECU
6. UCONN

West -
1. Navy
2, Memphis
3. Houston
4. Tulsa
5. SMU
6. Tulane

Brewer, Miller, Plagg, and Redford Jones were first team AAC players. Bowling and Jeremy Smith were on 2nd team.
But I can't quite give this magazine the "rabid-recommendation". Its cost is $9 and is out now on the newstands.

More later.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
Athlon's is on the stands at a cost of $10 - a little high from the $8 last year. I think they were satisfied with the formula from the past and had minimal changes which included an FCS section that was slightly better and larger. But again i get the idea they "pasted" a lot from last year onto this year - even 3 of the 4 teams on the cover were the same - Bama, FSU and Ohio St.

Comparing this magazine to Lindy's is an easy win for Athlon's, but its about equal to Street and Smith's. So I consider them improving their content from one year to the next.

They organize conferences alphabetically, but cop-out by starting with the ACC and then injecting the AAC as the "American" to put us second alphabetically. So I do recommend this magazine in the same sense I do Street's.

On the All American teams, Houston's Ed Oliver was first team DL and SMU's stud receiver Courtland Sutton was a second team WR, but oddly their 1st team QB was OU's Baker Mayfield rather than returning Heisman winner Louisville's Lamar Jackson who was relegated to the 3rd team. That's pretty odd.

AAC Predicted Finish

East
1. USF
2. UCF
3. Temple
4. Cincy
5. UCONN
6. ECU

West
1. Memphis
2. Navy
3. Houston
4. Tulsa
5. SMU
6. Tulane

Brewer, Miller, Bowling and Plagg were first team AAC offensive selections and Brubaker was the only defensive player on that list as a second teamer.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
Picked up Dave Campbell's Texas FB today. I always find it a great resource book for recruiting since we recruit heavily in that state. It has a lot of material on the state and emphasizes the excellent FB played there. Its always fun to get their view on a player we recruit or sign in the off season.

They primarily cover the conferences with Texas teams like the Big12, SEC, AAC, CUSA and Sunbelt as well as some FCS and Juco leagues down there.

I look at it as a reference book to keep handy through the season.

TBH I was a little shocked to see their predictions. But at least we know they are impartial.

AAC Predictions

East
1. USF
2. Temple
3. UCF
4. Cincy
5. ECU
6. UCONN

West
1. Tulsa
2. Houston
3. Memphis
4. Navy
5. SMU
6. Tulane

Campbell's posts an "All Texas" team of college players inside that state - but exclude players on teams outside it. So the AAC players listed are:
OL - Will Noble - Houston
WR - Courtland Sutton - SMU
WR - Linnell Bonner - Houston
DL - Ed Oliver - Houston
DL - Justin Lawler - SMU
DB - Khalil Williams - Houston

*Phil Steele should be out next week - about Tuesday or Wed.

Wow, this is the first publication I've seen pick Tulsa to win the West. It's not outlandish, but having to go through all 5 of the other teams (including an improved SMU and Tulane) to claim the title will be a tall task.

I was a little shocked too because Dave Campbell's TF usually isn't impartial concerning their bias towards the Texas schools. But thats expected and predictable. I think their love for TU in this poll has to do with how much respect PM has in the state of "Tejas" (Texas). He is known for his ability to develope those QBs and that is the main question mark we have for next year. We are pretty loaded elsewhere imo.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
Phil Steele's CFB magazine is now on the stands. Its the best magazine on CFB in the universe and is more detailed than all the rest combined imo. Its pricey at $13, but worth it imo. It always takes several days and even weeks to digest the mountainous amount of information inside this GREAT magazine, so I will take it slow at first. I will start with the AAC predictions and little by little expand into areas like attendance, program history, bowls, comparison of conferences. I will also come back to PSCFB occasionally during the season to review what was predicted to outcomes later on. I will also have to wait until the entire magazine is read to judge its final import and accuracy.

Let me start with the basics and give his AAC predictions. I think he really likes our league. Just my opine.

AAC East
1. USF
2. Temple
3. UCF
4. Cincinnati
5. UCONN
6. ECU

AAC West
1. Houston/ Tulsa / Memphis (tie)
4. Navy
5. SMU
6. Tulane

On the west, I get the idea that all the prognisticators that work for him just couldn't come up with a clear champion, so they compromised on the 3 way tie. It isn't perfect, but I bet they had some heated arguments in their war room before hand. But thats OK as long as TU is one of the three. In the end, how do you rate Memphis better than TU when we dominated them on their home field last year and outplayed Houston on theirs. So the argument has to be that both those schools have to come to Tulsa this time around.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So bare with me while I read this mountain of information.

More Later.

RE: 2017 College FB Magazines
Here is the composite ranking by using the CFB magazines discussed above. It should give a clue as to how the nations polsters look as a comparison between the teams in the AAC.

What I will do is assign a numerical number to each team using the magazines already discussed above. Hope this makes sense.

The team with the lowest number is the composite favorite and the highest would be the least favored.

Team---------------S@S--------Lindys---------Athlon----------DC Texas----------Phil Steele----------------------Total----

West

Memphis-------------4------------2---------------1----------------3--------------------1------------------------------11----

Navy-----------------1------------1---------------2----------------4--------------------4------------------------------12----

Houston--------------3-----------3---------------3----------------2--------------------1-------------------------------12---

Tulsa-----------------2------------4--------------4----------------1--------------------1--------------------------------12----

SMU------------------5------------5--------------5----------------5--------------------5--------------------------------25---

Tulane----------------6------------6-------------6-----------------6--------------------6--------------------------------30---

East

USF-------------------1-------------1-------------1----------------1---------------------1---------------------------------5----

UCF-------------------2-------------2-------------2----------------3---------------------3---------------------------------12---

Temple---------------3--------------3------------3-----------------2--------------------2----------------------------------13---

ECU-------------------4--------------5------------6-----------------5--------------------5----------------------------------25---

UCONN---------------5---------------6-----------5-----------------6---------------------5---------------------------------27---

Cincy-----------------6---------------4-----------4-----------------4---------------------3----------------------------------21---

So using this metric, Memphis would win the west and USF the east and would play for the AAC title. In that game, the winner(favorite) would be USF. And if the league was rated high enough, the Bulls would be playing in a NYD bowl game.
