not at P5 schools, everyone else can

Quote:Goff was fired Wednesday after he tried to reduce or take away scholarships for as many as 10 players at the end of the season, according to the Tuscaloosa News’ Ben Jones. Such an action would constitute a violation of NCAA rules.

Players were reportedly told about Goff’s firing during a team meeting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

Under legislation passed in January 2015, athletic programs in the Power 5, which includes the SEC, have to renew athletic scholarships annually. Athletic scholarships from Power 5 programs can’t be revoked for athletic reasons. Goff previously coached at Louisiana Tech, which is not in the Power 5 and isn’t subject to that rule.

If the NCAA has rules for P5 that separate them from the rest of us, then our Presidents have already ceded the separation.

Indeed they have, and I don't even agree with that NCAA legislation!!! This means a player can do whatever they want to, as long as it's not rape or murder, and still be on the team!! I don't blame the 'Bama coach for wanting to clear the roster, and this stupid rule will make coaches not really want to coach anymore.

Not quite. The NCAA is basically saying: you can reduce or take away a scholarship for any reason that is NOT related to athletic ability. So if you have an undesirable player that you want gone you just have to be smart about it. Assuming the athlete is a rule follower, attends class, etc, but you want him to leave (because you want the money) tell him that he won't travel, won't play, etc. any kid who wants to play will ask for a release and now you have your scholarship back. Of course, you better not put restrictions on that release.

I had class just outside of Joe Sewell Stadium last week and man what a stadium. The SEC doesn't skimp on baseball. The new coach from Auburn doesn't seem like an improvement which tells me Goff really must have pissed some people off to get the shaft.

Mississippi State is doing a $50M renovation on their baseball stadium.

I drove by it last year and its pretty impressive too, but the Sewell was a brick castle. What made State's so cool was all the retired #s and championship signs. SEC baseball must be where they dump all the excess football money. Arkansas's stadium isn't any to laugh at either.
