Man, there must be some lame cities in your region of the country - the cities here in the northwest are all very pleasant.

Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Columbus, Flint... need I continue? Consider yourself lucky.

No thanks.

Although... I was in downtown Chicago a few week ago and it seemed okay. Less sketchy than downtown LA.

I'll be in Chicago in late July for a week. Aside from the airport, I've never been. I suspect I'll like it due to the fact I'll be at a conference at Navy Pier and won't venture far from there. Also taking Southwest direct flight to Midway so travel will be easy and I won't have to deal with the schithole that is O'Hare.

It's not about my location, it's about the reality of shoehorning hundreds of thousands of people into a small geographic area with very limited access to resources. That's the dry powder keg analogy.

An update on why martial law was declared by Philippine President Duterte. His proclamation was sent the Philippines Congress last night. The claim is that the Marawi attack by members of the Maute group and Abu Sayyaf were planning a takeover of all of Mindanao. Whether or not true, I am not sure, however, those groups are responsible for a lot of terror in the Philippines and have beheaded a lot of innocent people. Today there was a report of foreign fighters mixed in with the killed terrorist in Marawi.

El Paso had a sort of martial law when I was in my teens. Anyone in their teens had to be off the streets after 10 pm during weekdays (?). I can't remember if weekends were okay? Too long ago to remember.

That's the law here, but not till 12, for anyone under 18.
