NCAA Division I map
I've been working on this for some time now and thought I'd share it with all of you college sports fans. This map shows every NCAA Division I program as of this year. While I know other maps have existed previously, none of them were completely up-to-date, so I took it upon myself to create one. The only program that isn't included on the map is Hawaii (Sorry, Rainbow Warriors!) due to their location. While I know there might be some programs that are slightly off in location, it was extremely tough to place everybody exactly without any guidelines. I did my best, so cut me some slack if something is a few miles off! 03-thumbsup

One thing that still stands out to me is how distance there is between programs once you get west of Texas and east of the West Coast. There are plenty of programs on the eastern seaboard, especially around New England and the Mid Atlantic, but when you look at states like Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, and Nebraska, giant plots of land are without DI representation. It's wild to compare that to states like Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, New York, and Texas to see that giant contrast.

Anyways, enjoy!

Excellent job...your geographic positioning was very accurate

You might add Incarnate Word. I think they are now D-1. They are located in San Antonio, TX.

I thought it was bad how these big western states had 1-3 programs apiece until I saw that Minnesota had one. Yet Minnesota sports are mediocre at best.

I'm nitpicking but Sam Houston should be way closer if not touching the Houston cluster. It looks like it's in Lufkin.

Amazing how, it seems, 90% of all schools are near a state border or sea, if not both.

Look at the Dakotas. Not even they want to be in their own state. Ditto for Wyoming and Montana. It's bad overall in Tornado Alley, everything skews east with little exception.

Incarnate Word is in the "Transition Programs" block in the bottom left, as they won't officially be DI till July 1! I'll add those transitioning programs to the map closer to the date. 04-cheers

It's also interesting that when it comes to the Dakotas and Nebraska the programs are all in the extreme eastern part of the state.

Texas Tech is also one of the most isolated D1 schools. Hundreds of miles from anyone.

In all the Great Plains, only Texas Tech is DI.

In the settling of the Dakotas and Nebraska, the western areas didn't even have cities when the states were born. Bismarck and Pierre were little more than train stops at the Missouri River, but were picked as capitols because they were approximately central in each state when future settlement was anticipated. Likewise, in Montana, the miners were first in the western half and the eastern plains didn't have people. The Great Plains were always settled last after the universities were already handed out.

Both the U of S Dakota and UND were awarded and named when the Dakotas were still part of Dakota Territory, but two separate states with named flagships schools were anticipated years before statehood. Only the Far NE and Far SE had established towns, as initial settlements were supplied by steamship from the Missouri River from Omaha and down the Red River from Winnipeg. It wasn't for 25 years until some of the towns out west were even platted by branch lines of the railroads.

I think some of the programs are eligible this year of the 2017-2018 school year like Grand Canyon.

About Texas Tech? West Texas A&M was one of their close rivals in the state. Hopefully they get an invite to D1 soon.

Bentley, Merrimack, Southern New Hampshire and Rowan wants D1. We might be hearing more invites to D1 soon like Bellarmine.

That's because almost nobody lives there.

Seriously, there's more people in a mid-sized city like Cincinnati than there between the Missouri River and the Eastern suburbs of Seattle & Portland.

Same thing with Western Texas. It's a huge area, but no one lives there.

D-I is full. Anyone not already at that level won't ever be a program worth discussing, minus an NCAA Tournament upset or two.

I hope you mean city and suburbs. Even Wyoming is bigger than Cincinnati.

I don't think it is full. Bellarmine is ripe for Horizon League to grab. They fit the profile for that conference.

WAC is not full. They need to grab more schools with the issues of Chicago State and UMKC may go back to the Summit.

Big South and A-Sun still could be raided, and may raid D2 again.

Robert Morris wants out of their conference. One of the three I mentioned on the east coast might replaced them. It have to be the right schools that conferences would want.

RE: NCAA Division I map
There are exactly 32 D-I programs west of the San Antonio minus California. Even with it, there's only 56 and just 3-5 outside LA and the Bay Area.
