DALLAS, TEXAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs have added 25 new scholarship players to their roster, Head Coach Phil Bennett announced Wednesday, Feb. 2. SMU will add 20 high school players and five junior college recruits as they enter Conference USA in 2005.

Nineteen of the 20 high school players and two of the five junior college recruits hail from Texas, keeping with Bennett’s pledge of heavily recruiting the southwest.

"I said the day I was hired that we wanted to recruit Texas and a 300-mile radius around Dallas. I think we did that again this year with 21 Texas kids. You have to have good relationships with the high school coaches in Texas and in the region and we do. That certainly helped this year and it is something that we will build on as we continue towards our goal of winning championships at SMU."

This season’s class is very impressive, featuring six three-star Rivals.com recruits. As a comparison, SMU’s 2004 class had just one three-star player, tight end Vincent Chase.

"We are very happy about this class," said Bennett. "It’s extremely balanced. We were again able to target a lot of in-state kids and kids that came to our camps. I have to give a lot of credit to my staff. They did a very good job in their evaluations and were very persistent with these kids. Once we get kids on campus we have a lot to sell - the great academics, the facility, the campus, the city.
