They should replace Baylor with New Mexico until the end of the current GOR. Then go from there.

I've never understood the love for New Mexico from the CR message boards. Can someone explain why you'd pick them over a BYU?

The best you can hope for IMO is that Baylor can't find a seat at any Big 5 conference once the B12 dissolves

I'll try.

1st, BYU is more like Baylor. Where as New Mexico is more like Kansas. New Mexico being the states flagship university. Basically has to play by the same rules as everyone else does. BYU on the other hand doesn't. They will demand preferential treatment. ( No Sundays, and other religious requirements.)

2nd, Boarder state. This might seem silly. But boarder rivalries are important. UNM could easily have rivals with Okie state, TCU, or Texas Tech. Plus. Albuquerque, New Mexico works as a bridge to the west instead of a fly to point. Like Provo would be.

3rd, Westward expansion. By going boarder state by boarder state. It makes it easier to lure programs. If the Big 12 finally went back to 12 members. You could easily see Colorado state being brought in. But what about Arizona state? Could the Big 12 lure ASU from the PAC 12? Money and boarder rivals sure would make it easier. Especially if ASU wanted out of Arizona's shadow.

4th, Good basketball and a minor bowl game.

Yep the no playing on Sunday thing will hurt BYUs chances of ever getting into a major conference. A conference like the WCC or the MWC have and will continue to cater to BYU as they are a massive brand for a conference like that, but throw them in with OU and Texas or USC and UCLA and their ability to stranglehold power in a conference diminishes.

As for UNM, I don't think they bring a ton to the table. Certainly they are the flagship university of New Mexico, but it is a very small population state with only 2 million people. If, and that is a big if the Big 12 expands and expands west then I'd think Colorado State would be the #1 choice of teams not currently in a P5 conference.

The Big 12 Spring Meeting will be next week. It will be interesting to see what comes out pertaining to Baylor as that is on the agenda.
