MBB to open 2017 in Virgin Islands (pre-season)
The experience of the trip will be great bonus for the team members and should be beneficial for overall team chemistry, but the key takeaway is extra practice time. This gets the Dukes an extra 10 days of practice time in the burg plus even more practice time once they arrive in the islands. Everyone including the freshman can participate in the additional practice.

Go Duuuuukes.

Pre-season games. Teams can do their pre-season activities on the road once every five years.

Ahhh...OK. I thought you meant it was one of those early season tournaments with games that count towards the actual record like the USVI Paradise Jam... http://paradisejam.com/wp-content/upload...ackets.pdf

Getting away for some extra time will definitely be beneficial for the team...especially with so many new faces.

Thanks for the heads up.

This can only be a good thing. More practice time for an inexperienced coach and a team full of new players

Do we know yet who else is in this tourney?

edit: Is it just pre-season practice and scrimmages? A couple of games against Philadephia U and Athletes in Action?

Don't think this is a tournament. Normally teams play some local clubs/colleges, get some practices in, and use it as an opportunity once every few years as allowed by NCAA rules to do some team bonding + get extra practices in before the official first date of practice in late September.

Side note, Dukes MBB have received 2 verbal commits from JUCO's (see Hoops Recruiting thread above) in the last week but still have no official signing info from jmusports.com or JMU MBB twitter...or, from the 2 commits themselves for that matter.

Know it was mentioned on the Future MBB Schedule thread, but want to rehash what a great opportunity this is for Rowe and staff to get 10 bonus practice days plus four exhibition games to start piecing the puzzle together.

Huge for the 11 newcomers (five freshmen, five transfers, and Alex Schulz) to get some experience playing together before the season officially begins this fall.

Everyone on the current roster should be eligible to play on the trip and during the upcoming season.
  • The five freshmen will be immediately eligible.
  • Stuckey Mosley and Gerron Scissum sat out last year after transferring in from D-I programs, and are now eligible.
  • Develle Phillips and Antanee Pinkard are immediately eligible as JUCO transfers.
  • Cameron Smith is immediately eligible as a grad transfer.
  • Alex Schulz is a (freshman) walk-on with immediate eligibility.
  • Joey McLean and Ramone Snowden are the two returnees.

Knock on wood but it's been a while that they have gone in with 13 players (12 scholarship) who were active with no suspensions/injuries or red shirts.

RE: MBB to open 2017 in Virgin Islands (pre-season)
Dukes MBB will have a 10-day practice window starting Monday, Aug. 7, and going thru Thursday, Aug. 17, before traveling to the USVI for a series of practices and games Aug. 18-23. I wonder if Walfish from the DNR will (or is allowed??) be able to cover any of the practices starting next week. With practically the entire team being new (less McLean, Snowden, Stuckey and Scissum), it will be interesting to see how the newbies are doing.

RE: MBB to open 2017 in Virgin Islands (pre-season)
The DNR reporter said we had only 3 dunks last season. In general, that seems truly impossible. But given our roster, maybe it's true. I'm not a fan of showboating, but only 3 all season? That might be an NCAA record!
