if ODU ended up getting $1.32m I wonder what their opening bid was.

That is utterly breathtaking in its insanity. My three reactions are:

(1) Where the H is that money coming from? Donations?

(2) It burns me up that ODU is getting that sort of coin. It should be us!

(3) If we ever PAID anything like that to bring ODU to Harrisonburg I would literally consider turning in my diploma with a letter of protest. Unbelievable.

Where is the cash coming from? For starters, LU has turned into a degree mill by virtue of its online curriculum. You got the cash, you can rub elbows with Jesus and take a college class.

Gotcha. But regardless one would think that a Christian university could find better uses for $1.32 Million than bringing Old Dominion to Lynchburg. Ugh.

Someone posted a rumor on the ODU board that LU is rumored to be paying UVA close to $4million to play in Lynchburg. The power of being a private school vs. a public in a Del. Cox world is becoming apparent.

Well, they're also building new facilities like crazy down there, but your point is well taken. The question about how evangelical schools/organizations spend their money is always open to second guessing

Sounds like it's Auburn's money. 07-coffee3 "McCaw said $ came from a “very large guarantee from a Power 5 school” later in the 2018 season. Liberty plays at Auburn, of the Southeastern Conference, on Nov. 17."

Paying over a million to play odu?

Isn't that cute.

Unless they open an smu slush fund for players it's all for naught. They won't be able to bring in good enough players as an independent to do anything meaningful.

Don't underestimate these con artists. They hold a Bible in one hand and look the other way in support of a sexual predator con artist who makes fun of physically handicapped people. There are millions of gullible morons out there to be exploited in addition to the millions of gullible morons who already are.

What you guys should worry about is trying to capitalize on all these sour grapes. Maybe you could make whine with them? I don't know.

RE: LU opens 2018 season in Lynchburg with ODU
The butt hurt among some fellow alumni and JMU fans over what LU is doing is ridiculous. I am friends with many LU grads and they make the same money as many of our "uber-smart", "far superior" alums make. Rather than trash them, why not pony up the cash and fund our alma-mater? When your only move is to try and make fun of what another school is doing, it puts you in a pretty weak position.

JMU is a great school and should strive for greatness in everything they do. Liberty has nothing to do with the athletic decisions made by our administration.

For me, I'm looking forward to Saturdays this fall and to going back-to-back NC's.

This. As I have said many times on this forum, I have done some graduate work at LU because they had a program related to my career. I know many LU alumni who are intelligent, hard-working, good people. None of them, me included, agree with everything their leadership has said and done. To the point, Olderduke is correct about our role in keeping JMU great and helping us move forward.

Are you planning on finishing your game vs UNC this year?

That's happens when half your roster is on the injury report. So what? UNC whooped us! How does UNC beating us benefit JMU, besides making its fans feel better about not being with us in the FBS? ODU is 2-0 versus JMU by the way!
Ol dirty will be a different team in 2017 and unlike some purple people here, we are an FBS team! Clearly your administration has no faith in its football program which is why they are not pursuing it. People still don't understand that ODU football hasn't even been around a decade yet and it will take time for us to win prime time games. However, at the rate we are going we very well could start winning games we are not supposed to...

Liberty probably paid some big $ for their Commencement speaker as well.

Liberty should be in a conference with like-minded institutions. Southern New Hampshire comes to mind. Definitely Trump University. What is the KKK's university? Ole Miss maybe. Most of the SEC I guess. There you have it. Liberty to the SEC. Done deal.

$1.32M is a crazy number, but they have gobs of money to spend. I do think they can somewhat buy their way into relevance, but that's a slippery slope in the world of I-A football. It will definitely be interesting to watch their progress.

The folks running your school in Harrisonburg don't look toward Lynchburg with disdain. They view us through eyes of envy and are trying to replicate the financial success. That's exactly what they should be doing during times of state tax dollar subsidy waning.

And that $1.3M check to ODU involved much more than one game in Lynchburg. It opened the door for a slew of dominoes to fall in our favor. IMHO it was frankly a stroke of genius funneling Auburn's guarantee into a bunch of dates on our schedules for years to come.
