So will the ACC be forever the bridesmaid when it comes to conference football for ND? The old Big East was and that conference might have survived had ND not had the NBC-TV deal that enabled them to operate autonomously.

My guess is ND stays independent unless either the playoff system or their sweetheart deal with NBC dictates otherwise.

Notre Dame never had a guaranteed games arrangement with the Big East. The Irish play 5 a year against the ACC, with all conferences members rotating home and away games. The two situations are not close to comparable.

Well, sure. Every move ND has made:

1) Joining the Big East in all sports BUT FOOTBALL in 1995;

2) Rejecting the Big Ten membership offer in 1999;

3) Joining the ACC in all sports BUT FOOTBALL in 2012,

....are all moves with only one real overriding goal----keep ND football out of a conference, any conference.

The other goals were important (good home for other sports, minor bowl bids, etc)....but ND could have just joined either the Big Ten or ACC in all sports in about ten minutes, but does not ever want football included.

So, yes. Unless "forced" to join a football conference, it is the last thing that ND ever wants to do voluntarily (without outside pressure) into infinity.

Why conferences think that they are "bridesmaids" or that ND owes some duty to those conferences when ND is always up front and fully discloses "this will never include football" is beyond me.

When the Big East football conference first formed, it was agreed that Notre Dame would play 3 Big East football games per season. In theory, it would be easy for ND to accomplish that with BC, Miami, Pitt and Cuse in the ranks. They started out that way, but in 2003 when the first ACC raid happened, and the Big East had to back fill with CUSA schools and division 1 newbies (Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, Uconn) there was no way that Notre Dame was going to honor that. The Big East was just happy to survive and needed ND for said survival.
