ND joining the ACC for football not so far fetched....
On this shortened edition of LSL, Fox Sports’ Tim Brando (7:05) joined the program to discuss UofL hoops and football and the ACC. He also explained why he thinks Notre Dame will join the ACC in football. We reminisced about the Metro conference and the always entertaining Louisville-Memphis State games.

So if ND comes into the fold, the ACC would need #16, which would likely be UConn.
The question then becomes do we really go to the 4 conference 16-team model?
Texahoma four to Pac-12?
Mizzouri and Kansas to B1G?
WVU, TCU, and Tech to SEC?

Scenario:

ACC (UConn)
AAC (ODU)
CUSA (NMSU)

That would make some people happy.

ACC at 16 would add pressure on the B12 to also push to 16.

It merely verified what I was told by a guy who has extremely well placed connections at N.D. He said that N.D. would join in concert with the ACCN's debut in 2019 and that they wanted Cincinnati as a travel partner.

So when I listened to the pod cast last night I could hear Brando resonating what I had been told.

It bodes very well for the ACCN's debut if it proves to be reliable.

Missouri is not heading to the Big 10 to give up a 40.1 million payout for 1/2 a share for 5 years while they buy into an equal share of the BTN. The BTN last year lost 448 million dollars off of its valuation. It represents a dying cable model so it's present value of 1.142 billion was down 39.2% from 2015-2016. The SECN on the other hand is currently valued at 4.692 billion. But there are no shares in it, and the overhead fronted by the schools was for upgrades in on site production facilities which are streaming ready. So the change in the delivery model doesn't affect us or our worth should the industry shift models.

Add to that the fact that ESPN is investing even more in trying to clean up the picture during streaming and I like our position, and so does Missouri.

BTW the ACC has made the same enhancements at their schools now in preparation for the ACCN.

If Connecticut heads to the ACC it will likely be as #18 and if so with West Virginia, but that's just my opinion. There are many more upsides financially to what a model of 3 divisions of 6 can do for a conference than you can get with 16 or 16 with pods.

I'm cool with that alignment but I think you mean Baylor and not Tech to the SEC. Iowa St and Kansas St to the AAC.

Baylor isn't going anywhere Muskie. And the thread is about N.D. likely going all in with the ACC, not about realignment options.

I don't see the need for anyone else in the P5 to expand. Adding Cincinnati pushes the P5 caucus to 66, which maintains the P5 majority.

UConn is not wanted by the ACC or any other P5 conference. Susan Herbst blew that years ago.

Cincinnati to the ACC also is a way for the four-letter network to tweak Fox's nose, as it infringes upon the Big Ten's territory. The ACC would essentially be camped out right in the heart of the Big Ten with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. Louisville is also in Indiana's backyard, and Syracuse interferes with Rutgers in New York.

Brando? Ok. Wake me up when someone with any real ND ties says so.

In the alternate universe fantasy of Brando's, ND would have some say in who would be #16.

My guess is ND would propose:

1) Navy for football only, and
2) Georgetown for all other sports.

That would allow ND to keep playing Navy every year without using up a valuable OOC slot and fill in the gap, geographically, that the ACC has with Maryland's departure.

It would also satisfy ND's desire to have a better "fit", i.e., to have more schools like itself in the ACC, with Georgetown being Catholic (sort of, lol) and private.

But, all of this is Brando fantasy, anyway.

OK...

So I don't think it all that unlikely that ND (Football) ends up joining the ACC. I don't know about the timing of it all, but I think it's probably more likely that something develops that limits the CFP to (Power) Conference champion, which then would eliminate Notre Dame's direct path as an independent. That, coupled by the ACC's desire to make ND a full member probably helps grease the skids of ND football being included with the NBC contract in-tact.

Let's also be frank...the present isn't what the past was. FB independence isn't what it used to be; it is now arguably easier to recruit within conferences based off the marquee match-ups inside the conference, the bowl guarantees are better inside the conferences than what the independents can do, and (the clincher)--conference membership is really much more important for the rest of the sports, which means the Conference is in the driver's seat more than it used to be. Would Notre Dame athletics be happier associating with the rest of the ACC other than another conference? If so, the ACC could well put the screws to Notre Dame and throw the gauntlet down: join in FB or take your chances elsewhere. The ACC is the best basketball conference and supremely qualified in all the other NCAA sports...except for hockey.

I don't think this happens this year or even next, but over the long-term? I think it more likely than not that Notre Dame ends up full members of the ACC...and probably THEY (Notre Dame) get to pick who would be "#16."

And Notre Dame isn't joining the ACC in 2019. I've looked at their future schedules going out 12 years. Notre Dame has so many non-ACC games that 3 different years they'll play only 4 ACC games. They aren't going to play 8.

There is no mechanism, contractually or otherwise, for the ACC to do this.

Why not keep going with this and "put the screws" to BC, Wake and others and just expel them.

ND is, legally, a full member of the ACC, just like every other school in the conference.

Not saying this "couldn't" happen, but it's hard for me to see Georgetown leaving the BE for a partial (and minority) share of the ACC. And that's likely true for Villanova as well. Georgetown has come through the conference re-shuffling as the "alpha-dog" of the Big East.
