I'm concerned that he's worried about his amateur status.....I hope it's not open to debate and he never received payment for football.

You'd hope our staff would vet this stuff a little better so we wouldn't have to worry about eligibility just as camp opens.

This kid has been working out with the team for a while now, and fully expected to be part of the 2 deep. Also way too late in the game to find a comparable replacement if he falls through. 01-lauramac2
Is he allowed to practice?

Who know there could be other issues related to him being an international student. An issue related to playing with the Finnish National Team? impermissible benefits while on that team? Or did he use up some NCAA eligibility in Finland????

This article is geared more for members of the compliance staffs than us posters but it discusses the issue. About 1% of NCAA D-I athletes are foreign.

More bs from the hypocritical NCAA. They have their rules that put heavy restrictions on the student athletes but at the same time their focus is on $$$.

'Nickle, I think they are trying to be sure that foreign athletes are amateurs like U.S. high school students.

It wouldn't be fair to U.S. kids if European players were doing post high school club athletics and getting say 5K stipends playing essentially semi-pro ball or something like that.

Everything you wanted to know about Finnish American football

Amazing that this wasn't resolved by now though. Also, wonder if these questions are why he was not higher recruited by the power fives.

Agree. Sometimes when a good talent isn't recruited higher there could be a reason (see Grissom discussion).

I believe Glass has signed his LOI and Harris III is on his way. Hopefully there are no clearinghouse issues and they can begin practice on day one. Not sure on Dakota and Jordan the other two offensive linemen.

Yes the difference between Grissom, Villie and Epps in basketball is that Villie and Grissom actually signed LOIs, Epps never did. Although LWH was a good basketball example of due diligence as he was not eligible to play as hoped for and rather than sit out one semester it was the entire year.

Good info.

In basketball it is a matter of the calendar. In November the student-athlete has two semesters of grades plus more test attempts. In FB the player only has one semester of grades + probably one more test attempt by the beginning of Feb.

I assume EMU MBB waited for Epps academically and I presume he never completed it. So he never signed in April.

In case folks missed it, the NCAA has tightened up academic requirements for freshman eligibility. Believe that happened in 2016.

Great news for the young man especially if we planned for him to be on two deep rotation.

Good news for the young man. I suspect he'll be in the mix for playing time. The EMU dline and defensive front 7 is deep.

RE: Unofficial 2017 FB Pre-Camp Thread
I am now thinking that OT Jordan Johnson of Garden City CC is a verbal and if he signs it will in December 2017 and enrolling in January. He would have IMO 3 years to play. Not sure what the status is with Dotson the DB who is also at Garden City CC. I know he's been looking at options. So the only question mark I have is Dakota Ramsey and if he is also a December 2017 signing or he is on campus for this fall.

Yes but he only got two years and not three. But great for the kid that his work payed off and we can see him this fall.

Good for him......a kid that really appreciates the opportunity. NCAA was trying to suspend him for the first 3-4 games, and take away his second year of eligibility. Glad for him, and EMU that it all worked out.

Sarcasm-aren't we all glad the NCAA is on the players side? Actually who protects the players from the NCAA?
