I can remember when in 1980, we paid both of our first-year assistants $15,000 and they got a dealer demo to drive. They were former Tigers.

They did a good job in year 1 so they earned it. I was actually surprised by the discipline of the team considering they had almost all new coaches last year. They seemed very well prepared for each game (win or lose).

It is great news for the assistants but it does worry me some. In a way it is a page out of the Fuente book. He declined a raise for himself to make it easier to buy out when he was ready to leave.

It is smart on both ends we can't keep him regardless and shows good coaches the university is easy to work with

He's also getting paid much more than Fuente at the time of his extension.

To keep Norvell forever, he has to be unsuccessful. For him to be unsuccessful, we have to be unsuccessful.

But there's this...

if/when he leaves for a better place, the next coach will look at Memphis and say....man, I can get to a better place if I take a head coach job in Memphis.

Ok. So it's only a silver lining. But not every cloud has one...right? And in the meantime, who knows, maybe we'll get to a big boy table.

Unfortunately, any of the below schools could open up after next season and I think he would take any of those jobs.

Arkansas? Ole Miss? Auburn? Arizona St? Arizona? TX Tech? UCLA? TX A&M? NC ST? TN?

Exactly. Just enjoy the ride while we are winning. Nothing worse than watching a longtime fan/former HH Prez on Tiger Lane throwing stuff into his minivan and swearing, "I'm never coming back" after we blew a lead to Tommy West and UAB in 2010.

If he wins big, he will leave for a P5...no amount of small bumps in pay will stop that.
