For the majority of American sports fans, the TV is the only affordable and convenient way to see games. No tickets to buy with a premium added to their face value, no travel expenses, no parking Nazis collecting fees, no inflated price refreshments, clothing level is optional (like in the TV ad), no weather problems (unless you have satellite TV and it storms) especially for those who have no alma mater to support.

The various kinds of sports media know that they will have a large audience as long as they offer decent choices. That is one reason for so many bowl games and playoffs.

It's been 27 years since Derzis worked at UAB. If his connection to UAB was going to benefit UAB somehow, don't you think it would have happened by now.

I suspect he is too busy fighting to hold onto his job right now.

He did help UAB until Watson's minion Moon rigged the bid and dumped ESPN college marketing arm

For the fan, the only practical difference between the two may be the size of the screen being watched. Both are much cheaper and more convenient than actual attendance at a game.

Computers can be hooked up to tv's and projectors

Group of Five conferences should start a streaming channel and package it for all the streaming TV service plans that want to exclude ESPN. I don't know, maybe the NCAA should just cut out the middle-man at this point? There's probably a few more hefty license agreements with ESPN before that happens, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it down the road.

This is the end game for most TV, not just sports, just gonna take some time to get to that point

I agree, then we'll all realize a la carte tv actually kind of sucks, then go back to packages.

In the context of this discussion, though, they are not the same. The rights for internet streaming and TV are different, and different players may or may not bid on them.

I basically use a la carte TV now, and I love it. If it weren't for live sports I'd cut out DirecTV Now right now and then I'd be done with any kind of "TV package" at all.
