RE: Fort Wayne or IUPUI to Horizon?
With RMU, IUPUI, and IPFW:

UWM/UWGB (2 hours apart)
UIC/IUPUI (3 hours apart)
IPFW/CSU (3 hours apart)
Detroit/Oakland (30 minutes apart)
WSU/NKU (1 hour apart)
YSU/RMU (1 hour apart)

If the Horizon is going to 12, it needs 2 schools in the "East" to push the Michigan schools to the "West", adding only one of IUPUI or IPFW. Alternatively it needs 3 schools in the "West" without adding Robert Morris:

UWM/UWGB (2 hours apart)
UIC/SIUE (4 hours apart)
IPFW/IUPUI (2 hours apart)
Detroit/Oakland (30 minutes apart)
WSU/NKU (1 hour apart)
YSU/RMU (1 hour apart)

You could substitute Southern Indiana or Bellarmine for SIUE, make them IUPUI's travel partner, partner IPFW with UIC, and potentially tighten this up further than what is outlined above.

An intriguing addition mentioned on the Horizon board is a combo of Fort Wayne, Lipscomb and S Indiana to go to 12. Lipscomb hasnt been mentioned, but it's not a very strong program but plugs the Horizon into Nashville. RMU is a problem as it messes up the travel partners. Lipscomb and S Indiana would make a good travel pair.
Those three all offer baseball, so that helps the Horizon substantially with that sport. Previously didn't believe the Horizon would take a DII, but if it school helped it to get into Nashville, harmed the MVC by competing in Evansville, and helped with baseball, that could be a winning combo.

Would have to think the OVC would respond with IUPUI and W Ill to replace a possible future loss of Murray St. The ASUN could be in trouble as well the The Summit League, but already posted what the Dakotas want there.

My sister went to Lipscomb. They view themselves as thoroughly Southern and want nothing to do with a purely Midwestern league; they want into the OVC with Belmont, because that rivalry is literally the only thing that will galvanize their support base. (There are no Lipscomb "fans" as such.)

The school doesn't deliver Nashville in any tangible way and is in a ritzy suburb that's tough to get to and navigate. Its facilities are rather spartan (not bad, just bland). It's not a program that moves the meter the way Belmont can with basketball, and it's not worthwhile for the Horizon League.

Lipscomb is a Church of Christ school, which is not merely limited to the South. Granted, the OVC would be preferable, that won't happen until Belmont leaves. The Horizon would still be a bus league, but the A Sun certainly isnt.

The religious affiliation isn't irrelevant, but Lipscomb is a Southern school first and a Christian school second. Southerners in general view themselves as closer to Florida than Indiana, even if, geographically, they're not. It's like the Dakotas/Montana dynamic, where those schools are closer to Tulsa and Indy than Missoula but couldn't care less about IUPUI or ORU.

As for the OVC, you never know; that's what they will continue to tell themselves. Lipscomb will do whatever it can to keep that door open and is willing to wait it out in the A-Sun if necessary, but if Lipscomb leaves the A-Sun, it will not go to a conference that doesn't have Belmont in it.

Would be a great partner for UIC because they, uh, both really suck at basketball?

I get it, they fit the footprint and all that, but there's about a snowball's chance in Hell the Horizon League takes SIUE. That's one of the least competitive athletic departments in Division I.

About the only advantage SIUE has over USI or Bellarmine is that it is already Division I. Both Indiana-Purdue schools are closer to UIC anyway.

I see that the MVC doesn't sponsor men's swimming, so I guess the needing an affiliate for men's swimming issue is probably out the door if they keep Valparaiso's swimming program in the Horizon League.

RE: Fort Wayne or IUPUI to Horizon?
Indiana has become really crowded lately with high profile basketball programs.

B1G (Indiana, Purdue)
ACC (Notre Dame)
Big East (Butler)
MVC (Valpo, Indiana St, Evansville)

Then there is Louisville right across the river from Indiana as well as Cincinnati, Xavier and Dayton nearby.

IUPUI and Fort Wayne do not stack up in-state at all.

It may make more sense for the Horizon to go for Missouri-KC in a state with 1 SEC (Missouri), 1 MVC (Missouri St) and 1 A10 (Saint Louis)...3 higher profile in basketball.

UMKC has academics that would be near the top of the Horizon League. That would please the presidents.

Since four of the eight teams you mentioned are former Horizon League teams, I have a feeling that if the league expands, it will probably want something in Indiana. Wright State and Northern Kentucky can still get 4,000+ people to show up to their games despite Dayton, Miami, Cincinnati, and Xavier having higher profiles and being not far away, let alone Butler, Indiana, Ohio State, Kentucky, or Louisville if someone has the extra time to go there.

MVC Men's Swimming is a MAC affiliate sport.

Fort Wayne is the exact "only game in town" small city/big town that can build sustainable support if things ever get rolling. Fort Wayne has an identity void in sports.

RE: Fort Wayne or IUPUI to Horizon?
So the Horizon will stay at 9 teams for the 17-18 season, so said LeCrone today at a Horizon League press conference.

But they still intend to go to at least 10 schools for 18-19 and maybe 12 or 14 after that.

Guess the Horizon is waiting for the MVC to go to 12 too, as they might have more schools to backfill and the MVC might take either Omaha and UMKC, which the Horizon could be looking at too as a pair.

Just watched the press conference(right column of their site). He mentions they have looked at up to 16 team models, and repeatedly mentions 14 teams and desire for Divisional play/split.

They should have added FUPW, IUPUI, RMU now. Or at least 1. Say Murray St. gets the invite and OVC offers IUPUI the spot. So now IUPUI isn't on the table for the HL for a couple of years or longer.

The Horizon has studied going to as many as 16 teams, but 12 seems certain according to LeCrone.

Fort Wayne is building a new arena downtown, which will be more modern but smiller than War Memorial Coliseum. IPFW just needs more time for the Horizon to add them.

This is smart. They go forward with 9 teams for one year and in the mean time have a chance to fully look and explore expansion candidates for 6-9 months. My hope is that they add 3-5 schools so that the conference realignment wagon gets rolling in full again.

RE: Fort Wayne or IUPUI to Horizon?
It sounds like they are also looking at D2 candidates as well. Lindenwood, UMSL, Indianapolis, Bellarmine are some cities that fit the profile for Horizon League. Southern Indiana in Evansville is another. Illinois-Springfield could be another. But, why did they mentioned Fairmont State in the last sentence?
UMKC, UAFS, Dallas Baptist, Central Oklahoma, Rogers State, Christian Brothers and some others do fall into the large cities/tv markets. Rogers State is in the Tulsa area.

Bellarmine in Louisville might be a better candidate. It gives Northern Kentucky a partner. If it is 14? Bellarmine and maybe an UMSL or UMKC be 13 and 14. What have Southern Illinois-Edwardsville presents? They do not fit the Horizon League's profile.

IPFW and Robert Morris seem inevitable, as both will have shiny new arenas being built. But Robert Morris makes travel partners more difficult, while IPFW would fit the need right now.

SIU-E needs a new arena, but who pays for it?

S Indiana makes some sense with its remodeled on campus arena coming on line later, but the Horizon doesn't take DII's, at least historically.

IUPUI just moved into the fairgrounds arena near it, but it's old even if refurbished.

Omaha, UMKC, and ORU could bring in another travel pair.

GCU and NMSU keep popping up too. They would help for RPI, but imagine a number of schools will oppose them for travel expenses reasons.

Wright STate and Northern Kentucky are perfectly good travel partners, about 70 miles apart. IT's 100 miles from NKU to Louisville.

That would be essentially merging the Horizon and Summit for one less autobid. Everybody loses money then.
