This would be different than the Big East leftovers situation because the BIG XII conference would simply cease to exist. Therefore, those potential 2-4 schools on the outside looking in wouldn't have the same bargaining power that UCONN, UC, & USF had when they started cherry picking mostly C-USA programs to join them.

I think that adding BIG XII leftovers is an important step in making the AAC a power conference and this will further enhance and bolster our narrative, earning potential and the perception of our league.

American Athletic Conference is making a power grab - Boston Globe

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/colleg...story.html

Aresco said the American already has the athletic achievements of a power conference, citing UConn’s 2014 men’s basketball title and the school’s three women’s basketball national championships since the league was formed in 2013, after the breakup of the old Big East.

He said the key now is to find a ‘‘legislative path’’ to be counted among the other big conferences when it comes to autonomy and post-season consideration, especially in football.

‘‘We’ll also need a better TV deal, we know that,’’ he said. ‘‘But the very first step is to be perceived by you, the media and the fans as a P6 conference. Perception in many cases becomes reality.’’
So implausible scenario 1 leads to more implausible scenario 2

ESPN might "pony up" for that and then add Army to make 14, football only for both. If they won't then we don't add. This must be tried soon, before the Big12 collapse if they do.

"They play a lot AAC teams already"--let's use another reason.

BYU play 1 game vs an AAC team this year. They play 6 games vs the MWC this year

SEC will only expand to 16 with school from NC & school from Va
B-10 is in same boat, could they make Conn & Kansas work ?
ACC at 15 now, BB only maybe [UMass, VCU, Dayton, Georgetown]
Pac-12 takes Houston & Hawaii. for 16 British Columbia & New Mexico

B-12 needs to expand 18 to fix all it's promblem
LHN becomes quesa conf network
double TV market & population base
Tex is not leaving B-12
for every school that wants out, 3 will jump in

RE: Looks like the AAC will simply add leftovers once BIG XII dissolves?
With the implosion of the old Big 8 (years ago with Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado departures) I lost interest in NCAA football. However, I have followed the SEC's efforts to corner NCAA football and the $'s associated with it. IMO the B1G has undertaken a strategy to combat the SEC which leads me to consider the coming downsizing of the P5 to P4 will start with the -

B1G poaching UNC and UVA from the ACC to reach 16 members; then the

SEC will poach Oklahoma and Oklahoma Stated from the Big 12 to reach 16 members; and the

PAC will poach Texas, Texas Tech, New Mexico and Air Force from the Big 12 and the MWC to reach 16 members; which leaves the

ACC to poach four teams from the remaining Big12 and non-P5 conference schools; who will these teams be?
