The vast majority of new construction (new to me is the last 20+ years) has been beautiful. But this monstrosity right here looks like someone dropped a glass office building on a Bluestone and then went ape-sh!t on it with Minecraft. Was this designed by 5 year-olds wired on pixy stix or what?

Haha that's a great critique, the blockiness did strike me at first but I didn't think too much about it. This was part of the old hospital (a newer part, I think the cancer center) so demolishing it wasn't necessary apparently, and they tried to incorporate it into the quad adding the columns and bluestone. It was a good effort but it does look a little off!

yeah..that's the old facade to the cancer center...

seems they could have gone a long way with some white / grey panels that we see around campus to cover that brick...and a "smoothing" of that gable to conform with rest of campus' look

but, cool colonade - kudos to alger for more Bluestone and tile

The entire glass of the old cancer center was replaced (thank goodness), or it would have looked even stranger.

All-in-all, it's a bit of a mish-mash, but its nice inside, and on ground level all you tend to see are the columns and bell tower.

Even just some gray paint on the bricks would have helped.

I was just about to mention that as well. If all of the red brick was painted gray we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Kinda like the new Soldier Field (described as the spaceship that landed in the Roman Coliseum)

It's not the most beautiful building on campus, but I think it's a bad picture. The red brick is not THAT vivid red. Looks to me like someone shot that pic in the last seconds of sunset on a clear night. They tried to match some of the SSC brick & bluestone architecture. I'm not sure they nailed it, but I give credit for trying.

This made me crack up. I'm looking at the board on my phone and when I first caught a glimpse of this picture I seriously was wondering if someone had made a Lego model of some new building.

Two weeks ago JMU issued an RFP for architects/engineering services for the complete interior renovation of Jackson Hall. No construction timeline or budget articulated. So put that one on the upcoming radar.

It'll be after the Wilson Renovations for sure since history is moving over there. From my discussions with history professors they're excited about being (hopefully all) under one roof for once, I think they are between 3-4 buildings right now!

Would have to think soon. If the building is in design, and work is beginning this spring, I'd expect something this semester. I think the CoB expansion was announced at Homecoming last year?

Is that one building or a covered walkway with the building in the background?

It's one building, looks like the covered walkway attaches to a single-level lobby area then the larger building behind. Remember, it used to be a hospital so this makes sense. You can see the "old" version on street view in google maps. Here's the picture from JMU's site.

If they were to cover the brick in bluestone I think they could really make it look like it wasn't retrofitted.
