College women's hockey
Major article in the Minneapolis StarTribune (the main newspaper for the metro) about the U of North Dakota dropping women's hockey as being a "blow to the game".

http://www.startribune.com/north-dakota-...420960063/

Quote:North Dakota’s decision to drop its women’s hockey program rocked the sport’s leadership and had coaches of Minnesota-based colleges and top local recruits questioning the thickness of the ice beneath their own skates.

“North Dakota is a warning shot across the bow for women’s hockey,” said Brad Frost, coach of the Gophers women’s hockey program. “Hockey is king up there so to see it get cut is an eye-opener. We need to be adding teams, not taking them away.”

The Fighting Hawks were one of 35 Division I women’s college hockey programs, and their loss is most acutely felt among the seven remaining Western Collegiate Hockey Association programs. Five of those teams are located in Minnesota.

“Hockey is a big part of the region we live in,” Bemidji State coach Jim Scanlan said. “To have 25 fewer opportunities for women to play college hockey is a huge blow.”

Minnesota high school hockey is a recruiting hotbed for the women’s college game. High school standouts represent all but 10 of the 97 in-state players who have committed to Division I schools for the 2017-18 season and beyond.

“This decision affects hockey throughout the Upper Midwest,” said Tim Morris, executive director of the Minnesota Girls’ Hockey Coaches Association. “North Dakota’s rosters over the years have been loaded with Minnesota kids. There are only so many places available in the Midwest to play.”

RE: College women's hockey
Here is the hard, hard truth: there's a reason why so many of the schools that have a varsity men's NCAA hockey program do not have a women's program.

It's a very, very expensive sport, and it doesn't draw many fans or TV viewers.

I think this move was the right move for UND's athletic financial situation. And would probably be the right move for several other DI hockey schools, which aren't major (Big Ten) schools.

I thought you were talking field hockey. I could see lady's ice hockey not being supported/available widely and any program dropping would hurt.

There is no such thing as field hockey in the midwest. Hockey means hockey -- ice hockey.

That said, I know field hockey is relatively big out east. And actually wonder if there are more DI field hockey teams than DI ice hockey teams for women's varsity (NCAA).

Hockey East supports women's ice hockey (since 2003). Providence started a team in the 70's. Couple of Friars have done really well:

- Cammi Granato was the captain of our 1998 US Olympic team which won the gold medal. She was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, huge honor of course and a great place to visit.

- Sara DeCosta was the goalie for that gold medal team.

UConn's men's and women's teams just moved to the hockey east a few years ago

So, roughly twice as many field hockey teams as ice hockey teams.

I'm mostly with you, temple.

Nothing wrong with club teams. Nothing at all! This country has a bit of an odd fascination with school teams.

RE: College women's hockey
We tried to compete with Minnie and Wisco, which was a mistake. Spent oodles on Euro imports as foreign scholarships are expensive. Got ten Olymplans out of the deal, but never won an NCAA game and rarely made the tournament. Attendance had been averaging over 1000, until this year when it was 800 something. Still the third highest in the country.

ESPN and SI have wrote viciously about us dropping the sport. But they didn't contribute toward the millions needed to continue it. Last year had $25 k in revenue and $2 M in expenses. The Minnesota teachers colleges keep expenses much lower - like a million. $60 mill was the endowment needed to continue the sport unless we moved it to a cheap off campus rink and that would travel T-IX implications too.

Now the Office of civil Rights has filed a suit against us, never mind that NDSU has a much worse T IX compliance track record. After we dropped baseball, at least one women's sport needed to be dropped to comply with T IX, but that never gets brought up.

In NoDak, the cities of Bismarck and Grand Forks only sponsor one HS team for numbers and ice time reasons. Most HS teams in the state struggle with numbers forcing them to play 7th graders against 12th graders. Minnesota suburban schools and a few hockey mad towns in NW Minn seem to be the only places that don't struggle with numbers to field a team in the region.

There is no checking in the women's game, so much of the hockey crowd doesn't even consider it hockey. If it was 7th grader boys against 12th graders, that would be a serious problem. But the women's game is so different, and boring to most.

If it was Roller Derby on ice, think the crowds would be overflowing.

Miami OH sponsors synchronized skating as varsity, which think draws better crowds than WIH. ChicKS just drool over it.

Which is something that really needs to be fixed. Most of the women I know who play hockey all wish it was legal and try to see how much checking and the like they can get into the game without being penalized/ejected (not NCAA but a womens league).

What is even more funny is that until college at least where I was from in upstate NY leagues were coed including high school hockey and women played. Often times you did not want to mess with them either as they played with a chip on their shoulder and would work to show you they were not to be messed with.

Particularly since at the NCAA they are playing against other women there really is no reason to eliminate checking. Relatively it should be only as dangerous as the men.

RE: College women's hockey
Thing is, there are several DIII private liberal arts colleges in Minnesota that have both a men's and women's varsity team. http://www.miacathletics.com/sports/wice.../standings

Some of the DIII U of Wisc campuses have it too. http://www.wiacsports.com/index.aspx?path=whockey

That shows women's college hockey can be done at a much lower cost level. To me, this points to the fact that UND should be able to have a women's club team, and use that path to satisfy any interests/abilities of UND female students who want to participate in ice hockey (that's Title IX language).
