Great story on what we've all been wondering about. Many praises to Ty for speaking up and helping others understand how big of a battle this is/can be for people, but there's help/hope.

RE: Ty Groce
What an amazing read. I was completely unaware as to why he came home and why he wasn't on the roster this past season. We speculated a lot on this board, but I'm glad he came forward.

It's incredibly difficult to admit to others that you've been dealing with depression and anxiety attacks (speaking as someone who dealt with this around the same age). I'm glad Ty got help, and found his love for life again. He is a welcome addition to our team, and I can't wait to watch him grow.

RE: Ty Groce
I've had a late son who battled bi-polar and a step son who has bi-polar, a very difficult battle for them and for the family. Ty's story is all too familiar to me but I'm glad he's doing much better now and a strong support system around him. I'm also glad he spoke out too often people struggle alone with mental illness, grief, depression and don't get the help or listening ears they need, their families need help and support as well. Kudos to Ty and his mom. I'm glad a person like Ty will representing EMU on the court and off.

Good read. Happy he's speaking out about mental health, and happy he's at EMU. A role model.

RE: Ty Groce
There is SO MUCH to this story, one doesn't know where to begin.

I'm going to take an easy road...

I was never quite sure what was happening. I did understand that he started at Northeastern but didn't last long. I had learned that NU gave him a full release presumably for medical reasons.

Because of privacy concerns and human decency it was easy for us to say that he was raised by a single parent and probably had an 'exagerrated' case of being home sick. Enough said. Virtually impossible to discuss his case without violating privacy laws and simple good taste and human decency.

I assume because of privacy concerns EMU said as little as possible, i.e., nothing about him. When dealing with issues of physical health, mental health, academics or behavioral (including legal) issues the less said by the U the better.

We also see this in the football program where players seemingly are suspended for a game or two or off the team for a year or drop off the program for no explainable reason (e.g., transferring, etc.).

In Ty's case he was not listed on the MBB roster. Yet, I had heard that he did, as indicated in the article, attend home games. Apparently he sat as a 'fan' with his mother, but not on the bench with the transfer sitouts.

I remember under English a few players were suspended for I believe two games during the season. Mum was the word. A few who had contacts with football players' parents learned the story. But for fans, like the U, the less said the better.

Here is an article by Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder

The good thing is the great progress modern medicine (e.g., psychopharmacology) is making treating mental problems for which the most effective treatment is aimed at neurotransmitters like dopamine (mental conditions, parkinson's, etc.), serotonin (SSRIs), etc.

Let's hope modern medicine continues to make great progress. Good health is a treasure and modern medicine helps us safeguard or enhance that treasure.

I am happy for him and really glad that he has the type of family that saw this as a disease. Major depression kills people--even with good care. 79, thanks for chiming in.

You miss the old standby lithium which levels the lows and highs. My late son on the high tide learned to play guitar and had wonderful bouts of creativity and then the crash. Lithium makes you feel like an emotional zombie no more highs and lows, many bi-polar people get off their medication to enjoy the high side of the cycle and then crash and self medicate (drugs, booze), its a constant daily battle and struggle to get them to walk the line and function. Suicide is common when off the treatment. The old name for bi-polar was manic depressive. Yes science has invented many wonderful drugs but they haven't made one called willpower or I can lick this yet. Sorry for the cold dose of reality many can beat bi-polar and lead productive lives and there are many who can't.

I remember bi-polar as manic-depressive of the old DSMs (diagnostic statistical manual).

Thanks, I've lived with bi-polar as a parent and step parent and know how incredibly hard it is for both the child and parent and siblings. I will keep Ty his mom and his family in my thoughts. Glad to see our athletic family is just that " a family" and not just in name, in action. Its not all about wins and losses, its how we help young people reach their full potential to make this world better no matter what the challenges. EMU seems to be a doing a wonderful job at that.

Agreed. I'm glad Murphy kept the door open for this young man to return, despite both parties not knowing if that would happen.

One thing we forget sometimes (I'm very guilty of this) is that these are kids, and not athletic robots. Why they transfer, quit, struggle, etc. is sometimes far deeper than basketball. It's easy to blame it on the coaching or the system, but we never really know what goes through the minds of these young men. I found it very bold of Ty to go public with his issues.

Amen.

I, for one, am not a big fan of unrealistic expectations of athletes, especially collegiate.

Being a college student and a collegiate athlete is a 'heavy lift', even for those who aren't fighting physical, mental, financial, etc. issues.

I never understand how an athlete with say an ACL can manage to get treatment and then try to be a student when an employed person might take weeks off work to recover.

I will admit that I was aware of this situation for the past few months. Of course, I didn't say anything on this forum for obvious reasons. I was not, however, aware of the severity of this situation. I do know that Northeastern was very supportive of him and did not put any roadblocks in the way of his transfer.

I did see him play a few times in high school. He struck me as a low energy and disinterested player. I think this now explains it.

Really glad that the kid is home and is doing well. Looking forward to seeing him on the court.

Thanks for the post.

It seems very obvious that he has a very supportive mother and being home is absolutely the best thing for him.

When one is struggling in life, it is always best to have as much social support as possible and that typically can be a parent and others such fmr. high school coaches, teachers, and local friends.

And kudos to NU for their 'person first' approach. Whenever there are physical or mental health issues the school should 'bend over backwards' to do what it best for the kid.

Helping a student-athlete cope has a higher priority than worrying about Ws and Ls. Ws and Ls are always secondary considerations for a student-athlete.

RE: Ty Groce
BTW, one thing about 'being home.'

Some athletes need to GET AWAY from home and a lot of bad influences.

Other athletes need to BE home to get needed support. This obviously seems true here.
