Realignment Trigger
For years we have speculated on what movement would trigger the next round of realignment.
Keeping in mind that at some point the large conferences will divide back into smaller ones, it is no inconceivable that 18 teams conferences might first come into being. With that in mind, the next round of realignment will probably be started when Notre Dame joins the ACC as a full time member, followed shortly thereafter by Cincinnati. I do think once those things start, it would be possible for the ACC to grow by two more teams in the east.

Yep, I posted essentially the same last night on another site. Should the SEC land UT and buddies, or OU and KU and buddies, or even OU and WVU with OSU, or even the big one OU and UT, I don't see how we do so without having to take a couple of others. I think that will be the price of at least 2 of those brands. The Big 10 is actually disadvantaged here. They can't take the brothers. The PAC can and that's why the SEC may have to make a similar offer for the schools they want. But that's only if movement happens early. If for any reason we wait until 2 years out from the GOR expiring (2023) nobody will take the extra schools.

The internal power struggles within those schools would be epic. Think Mizzou is an issue? Texas, OU and KU would be Mizzou times ten. Their B1G/PAC factions would surely make a mess out of an SEC move. Kansas fought that cultural battle way back in the 1850s. Austin is a liberal bastion. OU has already tried to get into the PAC.
