Wrestling AA Beazley transferring to Michigan. Team continues to go down hill from where it was a few years ago. Has not had many too 100 recruits lately and the one they get transfer.

It is really disappointing how many upperclassmen are left on the roster from year to year. Seems like each class starts 8-10 strong and through attrition is down to 1 or 2 4 years later. I understand there will always be some attrition, that is normal. ODU's roster just always seems to be so bottom heavy and those upperclassmen are the bedrock of a sport like wrestling.

While some of this probably has to do with Martin, wrestling is a grind like few other sports.

There is always going be high turn over in wrestling. Wrestling is a burnout sport with no end goal (no pro level outside of a few tournaments but the money isn't there to support yourself). I burned out in my high school years and lost all interest in completing. I watched many of my buddies who were 2-3x state champs from GB go off to college just to dropout of the sport mentally and physically within the first two years of college. Like ODUNYG stated its probably do to Steve. I can't speak on how he runs the program at ODU but during my GB years he was the type of coach to take every breath or mile out of you, it was always do one more drill, do one more rep, do one more lap around whatever neighborhood he had us running.

I'm friends with a former wrestler and he told me Martin is a good coach, but very strict and tough. He said it paled in comparison to his HS coach (a well respected one from NoVA) who he said his teammates would kick down brick walls for. He said the kids Martin coaches don't see him that way.

You bring up an interesting point though about no end game. College wrestling could be a feeder system for MMA as that continues to gain more popularity.

Yeah I wrestled up to the first semester of my freshman year in college, and burnout is real. We have had some solid prospects flame out or transfer recently, and that has to hurt the 5 year plan. The Saavedra brothers and the younger Warner brother come to mind. But on the flip side there have been some solid transfers in (Early and the kid from ASU(?) come to mind. Wrestling is the best feeder for MMA, but not all of these kids want to get punched in the face when they move on I guess. Mecate won his first fight a couple of weeks ago by the way. Looks like he is enjoying the process.

I agree that not all kids want to get punched in the face, but there are kids that are getting into the sport now with MMA in mind. That wasn't the case when I was in HS.

Regardless of that, I have to think that wrestling has to have a pretty high turnover rate across the board compared to other sports. I had some friends from HS that were decent wrestlers that tried their hand at the college level and just couldn't cut it. Its got to be humbling going from a situation where you didn't lose all that much to getting tossed around every day at practice like you're some scrub. I bet there's a lot of kids like that at every school, every year.

RE: Per Intermat
ODU Wrestling NCAA History broken out in the pre-Steve era and his current tenure. There's a handful here who actually have an understanding of the wrestling structure and system.

Beazley transferring back home as a graduate transfer is disappointing from an ODU standpoint, but how many schools also have the scholarship money to have a guy tied up for beyond the five years? Beazley took an Olympic redshirt and when he was recruited, it wasn't super likely he would have qualified for an Olympic redshirt by taking 2nd at the World Team Trials in Greco. That disrupts the recruiting and scholarship timeline. I'm sure they'd have loved to keep Kevin around. He's a great kid and served the program well. But he also received his degree and had the opportunity to return home, not exactly something to be super upset about.

As far as "flaming out" and going downhill, let's also look at things from a perspective of the program. If we're looking at the wrestling program in a manner compared to how we view the past success of the women's basketball program. let's compare.

Division I Championship Qualifiers
1969-2004: 56
2005-2017: 55

Division I All-Americans
1969-2004: 9
2005-2017: 9

Since James Nicholson placed in 2008, becoming the school's first All-American since 1995, ODU has placed a wrestler on the podium four straight years on two occasions.

So in 13 years, Coach Martin has equalled the All-American count in the program's previous 35 seasons and also almost equaled the qualifier totals in the same timeframe.

Steve Martin (13) 144-99-3 (.653)
Gray Simons (17) 136-116-2 (.539)
Billy Martin (1) 13-11-2 (.538)
Wade Schalles (3) 42-17-2 (.705) - Good dual record, only 5 qualifiers and 1 AA
Peter Robinson (26) 172-132-7 (.564)

Three of the last four have been losing dual seasons, but also figure the MAC was much tougher than the CAA in terms of quality dual competition. This gets turned around soon (dual records the last 3 years).

The last two years have been a bit rocky in terms of some drama within the team, but it's cyclical in individual sports. Even "dynasty" programs have that down year. We're not a dynasty program and with large rostered sports where there's little scholarship money for anyone outside of the starting lineup, retention will always be a problem. However, the responsibility to the department regarding APR has been a key point, since the kids who leave, for the most part, have been eligible and had GPA's above the threshold to lose APR points.

The last two years have been a bit dodgy, yes, but "flamed out" is a gross overstatement. That great group with Nicholson-Hutter-Williams-Brown-Strawn was a perfect storm of all kids panning out.

What you see at ODU isn't uncommon within the sport.
