The brand power of WVU, ISU, Ok St, KState + whoever else far exceeds anything in the current AAC.
Plus, there are some MWC and AAC schools who wouldn't mind a mulligan on realignment. I'm not sure that Air Force or Colorado St. were thrilled to align with SJSU or Utah St. and Houston and Cincinnati would love to align with Oklahoma St., Kansas St., and WVU and separate from some of the final AAC additions.
I think the Big 12 will choose East OR West, not both. Most likely they choose East because of a bigger population base and better overall athletic programs. They'll lose P5 status and there's no point in being in a far flung league without that kind of money backing them.
The 12 year deal for the current system funs through 2025. If something like this happens in the years before then the B12 would not lose P5 status any more than the BE lost BCS status when it backfilled UL, UC, and USF for football from C-USA to get back to 8 programs. Its what they do in the years between backfilling and the deal expiring that would count.
