Another Aggie tranfers
Sharp shooter Braxton Huggins has put in his paperwork to transfer. Aggie basketball is turning into a dumpster fire.

RE: Another Aggie tranfers
We are talking about this in the WAC transfer thread. I don't think NMSU is a dumpster fire though. I am however interested in who Jans can scrounge up for next season.

With players like N'Dir, Chuha, & J. Jones still on the roster, along with expected contributions from guys like Harris & (hopefully) Figueroa, I just don't see the doom and gloom.

It absolutely sucks. However, players that choose to stay will be galvanized by the experience. They will play tough, angry, and together behind Jans. That "Us v. The World" garbage PDub was peddling last season just got really real.

Unless you know something the rest of us don't about more possible/probable departures, I'm not counting on anything other than a talented Aggie roster stepping on the floor, ready to continue their impressive run atop the WAC.

RE: Another Aggie tranfers
OK, "if" Coach Jans can retain the current remaining roster AND signees, it is not all gloom and doom for NMSU's program.

There are some big "ifs" but if Jans can navigate treacherous waters the summer, NMSU does have enough talent to still win the WAC.
This is the roster as it stands...

AJ Harris... 5'9... 164-lbs... So... PG
Joe Garza... 6'0... 175-lbs... Sr... PG (walk-on)
Sidy Ndir... 6'2... 185-lbs... So... PG/SG (recovering from injury)
Gabe Hadley... 6'3... 177-lbs... Fr... SG (commitment tentative)
LJ Figueroa... 6'5... 195-lbs... Fr... SG/SF (commitment tentative)
Jalyn Pennie... 6'5... 185-lbs... Sr... SF (possible early graduation)
Jemerrio Jones... 6'5... 175-lbs... Sr... SF/PF
Tyree Robinson... 6'5... 220-lbs... Jr... PF (commitment tentative)
Jachai Simmons... 6'7... 180-lbs... Jr... SF (commitment tentative)
Johnny McCants... 6'7... 198-lbs... Fr...SF/PF
Eli Chuha... 6'7... 228-lbs... Jr... PF
Marlon Jones... 6'7... 222-lbs... Jr... PF (recovering from injury)
Johnathon Wilkins... 6'10... 218-lbs... Sr... PF/C (possible early graduation)
Bollo Gnahore... 6'10... 258-lbs... Fr... C (recovering from injury)

Hopefully Jans can patch work this team together. He has three guys recovering from season ending injuries... Sidy Ndir, Marlon Jones, and Bollo Gnahore. He has two players who are possibly close to graduating... Jalyn Pennie and Johnathon Wilkins. And he has four newcomers who he must re-recruit or possibly lose... Gabe Hadley, LJ Figueroa, Tyree Robinson, and Jachai Simmons.

IF Jans can convince Gabe, LJ, Tyree, and Jachai to stay...
IF Sidy, Marlon, and Bollo can get fully healthy...
IF Jalyn and Johnathon don't decide to leave if they graduate early...
Then NMSU might still have a contending team for the WAC Championship. And, IF Jans can sign one more guard and maybe a forward then our chances get even better.

Here's what I KNOW. Gnahore has a catastrophic knee injury. Weir was already going to get rid of him because of it. Figueroa, Robinson and Simmons are not coming. Jury still out on Hadley. Chuha and Harris still might leave. Perfect storm for Grand Canyon and Utah Valley to win WAC this year. I should clarify on Figueroa. He was enrolled but has already transferred to a junior college. Thanks Weir you bastard.

OK, let's say what you've stated has occurred, I guess the first important thing for Jans is to secure Ndir's, Harris, and Chuha's commitment to his program. With them three and the remaining roster Jans has a solid starting line up. But Jans now need to build a bench and at a minimum has four scholarships to fill (currently). In this case, I would rather Jans go after mostly grad transfers and JC players rather than him sign freshmen from a depleted 2017 class. He can then re-intensify his efforts for the 2018 class. Although, I would like for Jans to keep Gabe Hadley in the fold if possible.

1. AJ Harris... 5'9... 164-lbs... So... PG
0. Joe Garza... 6'0... 175-lbs... Sr... PG (walk-on)
2. Sidy Ndir... 6'2... 185-lbs... So... PG/SG (recovering from injury)
3. Gabe Hadley... 6'3... 177-lbs... Fr... SG (commitment tentative???)
4. Jalyn Pennie... 6'5... 185-lbs... Sr... SF (possible early graduation)
5. Jemerrio Jones... 6'5... 175-lbs... Sr... SF/PF
6. Johnny McCants... 6'7... 198-lbs... Fr...SF/PF
7. Eli Chuha... 6'7... 228-lbs... Jr... PF
8. Marlon Jones... 6'7... 222-lbs... Jr... PF (recovering from injury)
9. Johnathon Wilkins... 6'10... 218-lbs... Sr... PF/C (possible early graduation)

Probably starters...
AJ Harris
Sidy Ndir
Jalyn Pennie or Jemerrio Jones
Eli Chuha
Johnathon Wilkins or Marlon Jones

It's still a decent line up. With Sidy, Eli, and AJ on board, NMSU on is still in the hunt for the WAC Championship; but no longer the favorite. Jans will needs some decent gains with his new arrivals. The transfer (Dickerson) from South Dakota State would but a good pick up; if Jans can make it happen.

I'm not happy with recent events but I don't put this on Jans in the least. I just pray Jans is as good as advertised as a tactician and he can muster up some good recruits in these late stages of the spring signing period. Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

I tend to agree with dancing. I think CSUB is going to be good. But frankly, UVU has lost less and added more to its' roster than CSUB. I think they are the sleepers to win the WAC.

Before the Weir fiasco, I thought NMSU was the only team out recruiting UVU this year. But with Baker graduating, Huggins transferring and possibly others jumping ship, NMSU has opened the door for another team to be the BIG DOG of the conference.

I would bet my life savings that CSUB will finish above Utah Valley. CSUB lost Matt Smith who doesn't have a direct replacement and that's the only "worry". He wasn't really an offensive threat just a dude who gave it his all every game and was a great defender. Taze Moore is the same player but probably more talented. Durham and Briggs who played a lot during the year just step in for Basile and Airington. I really don't understand this tbh. UVU out recruiting CSUB? In what possible way? Jarkel Joiner was the 2nd highest scoring player in high school basketball and had offers from NMSU, MTSU and even TCU who just won the NIT. He choose CSUB though. Darrin Person was just named player of the year for his region, dominating it. He had an offer from Fresno State but came to CSUB. CSUB may not have the depth as before but will be just as good as last year if not better. They will be young but ready. Rod Barnes is still the best coach in the WAC and that's the big difference. I guess this team will never earn anybodies respect and that's fine, they like it that way.

According to UVU's roster, they only lose three Seniors; Poydras, Young, and Bastien. And also lose one transfer Jared Stutzman. However, Pope has four players currently red-shirting; BYU transfers Cory Calvert (6'3, JR, PG) and Jake Toolson (6'5, SO, SF). Kent State transfer Jerrelle DeBarry (6'5, JR, SG), and Oklahoma transfer Akolda Manyang (7'0, SR, C). And, Pope also added top 100 JUCO Ben Nakwaasah (6'1, JR, PG). UVU "should" be much improved next season.

I have no doubt they will be much improved but better than CSUB and GCU? I really doubt it. They need to prove they can finish above 5th in the conference first. Teams aren't built in one year.

Yea I think csub will drop to the middle of the pack. Which is only 4-5. UVU never seems to play to their potential though. But college ball is weird so i'm usually wrong.

They were the WAC Regular season champions a few years ago. That seems to me a little better than 5th place.

With Mark Pope as coach? No. Everybody on that team is gone, it doesn't mean anything. Plus CSUB and GCU were still building their programs. Utah Valley hasn't proven anything. You don't just go from 5th to 1st in a conference this top heavy.

RE: Another Aggie tranfers
Nobody asked me, but I think Pistol & I got on the UVU bandwagon around the same time last season. We might have been a year ahead of ourselves, but UVU still looks primed for a come up. Most of the guys will have had a solid year of playing together under their belts. Pope now knows exactly what he has with this mix of players & can push them further down the road of how he wants his team's to play.

We've seen it in glimpses and even whole games. If Pope can sustain the potential we've seen in flashes & stretches, the rest of the conference better be paying attention. I could easily see the finishing top half. Higher wouldn't shock me either.
