Of course they are, otherwise there would be a huge bulleted list of rules.

So yes, moderating a "what makes a good post" or "this is not what we'd like to see in the thread" is a messy task even more so when the rules are fuzzy. So we are simply trying to put a few guidelines in place that hopefully the poster base will respect. Sometimes there are going to be mismatches between moderation and any given person's preferences for how a message board should operate or a thread should progress, but this site can't be all things to all people, which is a bummer but a reality.

Let's add this caveat. If a poster is putting together a thread that they would like to have taken seriously, let's put [Serious] at the start of the thread title. That will help set the stage for the thread.

Actually I think you nailed it with "this is what the post should be" part... A link, a real thought, a descriptive title, and a snippet of TFA are all easy to do and easy to see if done.

But on the comments, sometimes brevity is the soul of wit. There I think you just apply the AUP.

I was really only bothered by the "others feel like they can't get a word in" part. That's literally their feeling, and an incorrect one at that. You and I could post 200 replies each to this but it would not prevent someone else from putting their reply up, no matter how they felt about it.

And what if someone abuses that, or uses it to sensor comments. I disklike the idea that the OP "owns the discussion"

The OP doesn't own the discussion, any actions would be taken by the moderators. It's simply a way for someone to say "hey here is something I put time and effort into posting and I hope we can have a serious conversation about it." We'd like the opportunity to have threads that are more about information exchange than they are about snark, clapbacks, or "wrecking" your opponent.

Let's assume the best here of posters wanting to take advantage of quality threads, posts and conversations, agreed?

Never would've worked. HRC and her ilk are against pipelines.

Hey! I'm all for beer pipelines!

Halve Maan brewery in Belgium actually opened a beer pipeline recently. It links their historic brewery in the city center to a bottling plant in the burbs. It solved a logistical problem, as before, fleets of trucks would have to navigate the narrow roads of the medieval city to get back and forth between the brewery and the bottling plant.

Would it not be easier to just require all threads here to be of the serious nature and dispatch the rest to the WWE forum?

I agree with Bull...I can easily foresee everyone thinking their thread is serious and abusing the label.

And one thing I would especially like to see added is the reminder to everyone to stop making posts that do nothing but speak to a poster directly and not the topic. I'm tired of reporting those posts and I'm sure you're tired receiving the reports!

serious nature is really in the eye of the beholder.

A title that's descriptive of what will be in the thread
A link to the item that is being posted
A quoted section or two from the link that paraphrases the idea behind the post
A line or two of personal comment or observation about the link or a discussion-sparking question
Write [Serious] at the front of the thread title.

Here are our thoughts on what we'd like to not see in the thread:

No need to reply to and quote long threaded sections. Cut out what isn't relevant so that the thread is easy to read and follow
Spamming with off-topic, content free comments
Threadshitting with dismissive comments that add nothing to the conversation sets a negative tone for the entire post
Threadsitting is constant back and forth comments, or just a lot of comments, that make others feel they can't get a word in edgewise.

Sounds like you described my threads perfectly. I'm good.
