Think about it. Mel Kiper is getting paid handsomely to do ... exactly ... what? Watch a bunch of kids play a game and ... give his opinions on the players. Only in America. #FirstWorldProblems

When you think about it there is no need for recruiting analysts and draft analysts. The proof is in the pudding. The kid pans out or he doesn't. The NFL team takes the kid or it doesn't. These were jobs that manufactured, dare I say it, fake news. And IMO we don't need the predetermined homer to be the mouthpiece for his or her conference of coverage. Objective reporting covers all conferences just fine. Just have an objective reporter assigned to cover a conference. And he or she doesn't need to be an ex-athlete of that conference. I'm glad Tebow is playing baseball. I liked the guy, but he was out of place on the sideline or Game Day, or even on the Finebaum show. ESPN has way too many of these and there women softball and basketball coverage has a few very good voices and a plethora of absurd ones.

Paul Kuharsky, who covered the Tennessee Titans for ESPN.com, also announced he had been laid off earlier in the week:

Knew cuts were coming. Sad to say nine great years at ESPN end for me in July. Please stay tuned to @Midday180.

— Paul Kuharsky (@PaulKuharskyNFL) April 24, 2017

While I have only met Paul a few times, his wife is a good friend/former co-worker. Sad to see this happen.

Whether that gets old or not is likely a matter of your pov. If you are primarily a P5 fan then yeah but if you're more of a G5 fan, then there are probably not nearly enough slaps at the P5.

The part that gets old about it is that it derails threads intended to discuss other issues and the anger of the G5 is misdirected. We didn't create the milieu. The networks did. We didn't choose to leave you behind and all of the history up until realignment proves that. Markets first and now content, delivered in packages that maximize the profits of CBS, NBC, FOX and ESPN are why even large schools are leaving lifelong rivals to realign. P5 posters, P5 schools, and P5 conferences are not the cause of the product segregation. In some ways they are beneficiary and in some ways they are victim.

But I am putting all of you on notice that in the future turning any thread away from the OP and into a slap fight against the P conferences will get you warned and then banned for screwing up the thread.

If you want to hurl your angst at the P5 start an appropriate thread in which to do it, but do so on your own conference board. This board is an open forum for all and one in which we are intended to discuss issues. But, because of that we have a tighter enforcement of etiquette. It's not the smack room or verbal assault area and the board has lost its effectiveness putting up with this crap.

Heck even an occasional thread here dedicated to what you see as the injustices of the situation is okay as long as it isn't brought up in every unrelated news thread or in threads started about just a P5 issue.

The mods have discussed these problems among ourselves ad nauseam. We have nothing against you guys or the G5 schools, but we do have a major issue with the derailing of topics to discuss things not implied by the OP, or just to vent hostility that is totally unrelated to the OP.

There will be one formal warning for the first violation of this protocol followed by a forum ban if it continues.

The thread about Illinois G5 schools turned into a discussion about schools not even in Illinois and wasn't directed against the P5. This stuff has to stop. JR

I admit I don't post on this site much anymore because this site has become a 'look at me' and status crowing mess. But, this goes both ways. I'd also expect the same treatment of posts and threads that turn into petty laughing and status flaunting aimed at G5 schools. Because that happens just as often the second anything even on topic turns into a negative discussion point on a P5 school. Just saying, this certainly can be applied in the reverse.

I don't know what happened to McMurphy after he left CBS, but it seemed like he lost some of his sources when he left for ESPN. He wasn't nearly in the know as he once was.

I could see why he'd be cut. He's not the same guy ESPN hired from CBS. And I'm sure he didn't come over cheap.

Hopefully, he'll get his groove back elsewhere. He used to be great at this stuff. Now, it's just op-ed nonsense, and he's never breaking stuff.

Yeesh. It's disappointing that ESPN is laying off people with actual journalistic chops like Stark and McMurphy. That's an entirely different category to me compared to run-of-the-mill ex-athlete analysts or nondescript anchors of SportsCenter.

I can see someone like McMurphy because there's so little realignment going on right now. He'd be much more valuable in about 6-7 years when Big 12 deal comes up.

Stark is a surprise. Although you have Kurkijan and Olney there presumably still.

True. But the guys who are just filler don't need to be guys who are paid high six figures or low seven figures. Talking head shows like "Baseball Tonight" or "College Football Today" - I think the ratings would be about the same whether the talking heads are highly-paid ESPN "names" or just good sportswriters who are knowledgeable about the sport and happy to appear on ESPN for much less money than the "names".

FOX pick Stark up with Rosenthal would be excellent.

Jarrett Bell got dismissed...on his birthday. If that doesn't reek of viciousness, then give me proof of what is.

That said, he's still has his gig at USA Today.

I wonder why McMurphy 's g5 playoff sources didn't give him the heads up on his impending termination? I wonder if his former salary is going to go into that big pile of money that he claims they were going to get to volunteer to separate themselves from the p505-stirthepot
