It does appear the current fundraising efforts through private donations back that up.

I think you are right, Ken.
I believe the idea is to move OTHER coaching staffs which are now at Bowen to the Convo.
The idea, I think, to the dismay of Luckey, is to vacate Bowen. It could be demolished and a new academic building built.

Yeah that's the first thing I thought when I saw this project: The sundowning of Bowen.

As I assume everyone knows, I don't live in Michigan and not on campus often. I'm dependent on others to tell me what is happening. I can't just walk up to the AD at a basketball game and start asking questions.
And I now don't have a faculty contact to know what is happening with the academic side of the house.
Someone closer to EMU should know if the U would do with Bowen. Renovate? Demolish and build a new academic building (including usage of the adjacent parking lot)?

Dear steve,
It was my initial understanding that Bowen and Warner gymnasium would be turned over to greater intramural use. The offices there would also be turned over to physical education instructors, and IM people. It was also my understanding that all coaches of the twenty-one sports, that are a part of our athletic program, would have their offices at the Convocation Center, or the new building to rise at the North end of Rynearson Stadium.

Thanks, Ken.
The idea as discussed is to consolidate athletics onto the West campus.
It has been so many years since I used to run indoors at Bowen and work out with the phy ed classes (I was a grad student so I couldn't take a phy ed class, although I would have loved to. No papers. Maybe a course in basketball theory. ) so I forget that there are physical education needs there.
What I'm getting at is that we think in terms of ATHLETICS, not IM or phy. ed. needs.
Based on that, I assume Bowen will continue to be used for phy ed classes and IM.

A couple things, I still have a few friends at emu working in admin and other positions at the convo etc... Your correct about funding for the buildings, however obviously the university is facing a major budget shortage, not just now but for the foreseeable future. It is my understanding that athletics will face a dramatic cut, regardless if buildings are built. Where that cut comes from, I have no idea. Also, faculty and staff are pushing the admin to hold off any new projects for athletics. Regardless of how they're funded, building luxurious spaces for athletics while laying off upwards of 75 people, is in bad form.

True, but as Super indicated DONORS are donating restricted gifts to this project. More than 10M pledged.
If they cancel it (they won't) the gifts need to be returned.
I hope folks understand that donors give money to what THEY (the donors) want. 6M (right?) came from a single person with naming rights, etc. etc.
And as I'm sure folks here now (hopefully some others on campus) that the project is in two phases.
If we can not raise the money for Phase II (the new IPF) then it doesn't get built, but the idea is to get Phase I done. As we've discussed the building permits the movement of coaches to the Convo and freeing up Bowen.
And, of course, it is HUGE for a lot of athletic programs as it get football S&C out of the Convo.
P.S. I heard the recording of the president's speech on the financial issues facing EMU this FY and FYs to come.

The Championship Building Plan Thread
I have some expertise and first hand knowledge when it comes to the Physical Education Department at EMU and it’s use of Warner/Bowen. It has been and is still used by many classes in conjunction with using Marshall. All of the professors offices are in Marshall but the facilities for many of the “Methods” courses are in Warner Gymnasiums and Bowen. It was my understanding that the new building plan would allow the athletic teams that use Warner/Bowen (wrestling, gymnastics, track/field etc) to move their offices and then allow for more of the health and human services offices including PE to be moved into Warner/Bowen. However those facilities are definitely in need of many updates/upgrades.
Also Steve, I had to write many oohhh many papers during my undergrad work in the PE department. Most people don’t realize that the beginning course work for PE/Health majors is very similar to pre med with classes like Kinesiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Motor Development/Learning.
I will now get off my PE soapbox. Wait no I won’t, I have a lifelong speech going on it.

Sorry, E'King.
I was a guest student in a class in physical conditioning. Al Pingle taught it. Push ups, laps, etc. no exams.

All good Steve. I just love when I get opportunities to educate that I am not a “gym” teacher.

I think credits attempted are down. If I remember right also some problems retaining students in residence halls (students having $ issues).
We are talking a 5M shortfall out of a budget of around 300M, I think.

I looked briefly at the EMU budget. Incredible how much is student financial aid.
Truth be told without so much student aid the number of students attending higher education would be down significantly.
