SDSU Associate Students vote to stay Aztecs

"The council voted 14-12 to keep the mascot, with one abstention.... Had the resolution before the University Council passed on Wednesday, the matter would have to the Board of Directors, a smaller panel also composed of students. The final decision would go to SDSU President Elliot Hirshman."

From the student newspaper: "Following the A.S. University Council’s decision, 10 A.S. members resigned from their positions."

This was a very close vote. And I guarantee you that it won't go away - they'll keep trying every couple of years.

its one thing to oppose the name Redskins as it is pretty obviously racist in nature or the Cleveland Indians' somewhat offensive looking mascot, but its another to be fighting against Aztecs. There isn't really anything wrong with names like Seminoles, Utes or Aztecs which basically are an homage to the tribe that used to live in that area, or Braves which carries a positive, strong connotation.

You think the entire state is covered with nothing but sand and cacti? Nope.

If SDSU students don't like the Aztecs nickname, then don't attend or spend money on athletic events.

I've been to Flagstaff on several occasions. I realize the pine trees in the area are plentiful, but Lumberjack to me would make more sense for a school in the Pacific Northwest or Canada.

That's a very valid point assuming the SDSU athletic department is entirely self funded.

NAU (Flagstaff) is in the middle of a pretty dense woodland. Here is a representative photo (many more on Google maps)

How little you know about Flagstaff.

What tree covers the most acreage in the United States - answer - Ponderosa Pine.

Where does Flagstaff sit? Answer - in the middle of the largest continous stand of Ponderosa Pine.

Former major industry in Flagstaff? Answer - Logging and Sawmill.

So when NAU was founded, there were plenty of Lumberjacks, and sawmills in Northern Arizona. Still a few around today.

Everyone knows the best lumberjacks are in British Columbia. Leaping from tree to tree... the giant redwood, the larch, the fir, the mighty scots pine....

There is today. Chicanos consider themselves as descended from the Aztecs.

Little known fact: USC was at one time known as the Lumberjacks.

That, of course, was before their student government voted to change their nickname to the Fighting Camels. The original nickname of the University of Southern Chad is believed to have been derived from the predominant industry in what was then The Great Sahara Forest. Several members of the student government resigned in protest over the change, citing the great tradition of their forebears.

The SDSU Orcas would invite massive PETA protests against Orca athletes being paraded in front of stadiums of people. Imagine the Sealions would invite protests too.

-OR-

Try to change the nickname.

Neither is "right" or "wrong".

He was replying to the poster above him, who more or less said there were Aztecs in San Diego.

At least it's not a negative stereotype like "Fighting Irish".
