RE: Global village is nasty place
as an atheist, I easily agree with his posit
there is no magic switch that brings cultures together unless on the same piece of land....it is then that wars are waged when that happens so power remains in the hands of "one" so the others are subdued into maintenance mode
in this case, "half full" is mere utopian thinking....
eradication of religion whilst genetically eradicating the others to produce a singularity is the only way "that" could happen in a "short" period of time
good luck to the meek winning the battle over the next millennia.....they're gonna need it....
Al Gore's "chaos" unleashing will be written about for many a moon....'they' knew exactly how this would play out....hell, you could write a dissertation on this topic

Article claims that technology makes us dislike each other.
I'm guessing this guy is a glass half empty kind of guy.
I disagree. If anything increases in communication technology relative to humanity is neutral. I belong to one facebook groups and there are people on from Africa, S. America and the Caribbean. It is a fun positive group and people learn a lot and about various cultures. I bet there are more groups like that so called negative groups. I had an elective in College, a long time ago, called Humanity and Technology and this was the primary topic of the class.

as I mentioned, you could write a dissertation on this topic....I should've included arguing both sides....
in today's portion of "history" (as I see thingys), the good seek out the good, the bad seek out the bad, and both try to change the others.....
it's a zero sum for too many to coherently absorb......hence, cultural chaos

The more people learn about each other the less they want to fight. Its when people feel denigrated or ignored that they tend to fight back

having money and land makes one not want to fight.....
having too much control only gives the tools to those that can create chaos....

I tend to agree. For example more exposure to the rest of the world makes islamists hate the world more. And the more exposure exposure I get to Islam, the less I like it.

RE: Global village is nasty place
The idea of the internet bringing people together is laughable. Just take any message board as an example. People behave to others in ways they'd never behave if they were interacting with each other in person. Not only that, but there's more than just a little evidence that blogs and social media have created echo chambers online that prevent anyone from having their own beliefs challenged. No doubt the internet has made life easier in a lot of ways, but the idea of it fostering some kind of global understanding is silly.
Furthermore, the idea that you can put people of disparate cultures together and that they'll see how they aren't so different and start holding hands and singing songs is just naive. Just take a look at any research showing how our friends and our spouses often tend to people who are similar to us.

Well he does mention a couple of studies that show the more you know someone, the more likely you are to dislike them. You can use them in your dissertation.

The article says that sadists tend to be attracted to message boards, hence the trolling that is common.
They do a good job moderating here to keep the name calling to a minimum which tends to drive out reasonable discussions on most forums (and leads to an echo chamber-even if 2 sides share the same forum-they just don't pay any attention to the other side).

RE: Global village is nasty place
Communication is typically what drives people away from each other. Unless some traits the other person has that resemble the other differences will drive them away. In the internet posters clear their minds of what they are thinking and usually they don't stop because we'll never get to know them personally. Take for instance Rewing and Fit, if I got to know them face to face I could probably become friends with them because we would never get to know their inner souls. This website has laid waste to anything that could bring us together. The three of us are so different in thinking and perspectives that personally "I" wouldn't want to waste my time being "buddy-buddy" with either one. We are so different in our lives and thinking that we couldn't even share a beer in a local pub. We would wind up either just going our own ways or fixing our differences through violence.
Same thing with two of my neighbors. Both are Liberals and Trump haters and I see where they gather their political information and that's the MSM. They espouse the MSM viewpoints because that's all they know. With one couple we get along because they usually don't talk politics and they generally are live and let live kind of folk. Now, the other one the lady is a big time Demoncrat and she doesn't hold back in her face book page. So much so that she told anyone that wasn't like her to leave her page. You can't be blunter than that. I stay away from her as she's certified nuts. I'll wave to her but that's about it. That's probably how if Fit and Red lived near my home that's how close we could become.
Thus, what created this distrustful, unlikeable, unreachable relationship was communication. People don't like those that don't share their view, PERIOD. They may talk once in a while but that's about it no one will invite the other to their homes…unless politics are left behind when entering the others domain.
