NCAA bans summer 2 a days
Week old news
http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/articl...l-two-days

I remember when JMU stopped 2 a days (at least 2 contact practices) under MM about 5-6 years ago?

Next up is 2 hand touch only during the summer..

RE: NCAA bans summer 2 a days
When these 18-22 year olds are making so much money for the schools, of course they're going to want to limit opportunities for them to get hurt - especially during pre-season practices. They're framing it as being about player safety, but it's mostly about making sure the thoroughbreds don't get hurt before they get a chance to run when it counts.

Boo! Things are changing. Coach Houston posted on twitter saying it was a good thing for the sport, so I will take his side on this one. No offense to any of you, but he has won a ring 03-wink

Because things have changed does not mean anyone thinks that's a bad thing.

At one time water was considered a weakness.

Seatbelts were rarely used. I used to lay in the back window of our car when I was a kid.

I could legally drink alcohol in college.

It was cool to smoke.

Concussions where joked about. Smelling salts and back in there!

.......Now the change I don't get is in high school is if a student get's a poor grade on a test they can just retake it? Huh? 04-jawdrop

Ugh, 2-a-days are a good thing. They give you more opportunities to implement your schemes on both offense and defense. You don't have to go full pads all the time, but time on the field in your formations, executing blocks, pursuit angles, running through holes opened by linemen, blitz timing, route running against defenders are all important things that need to be done. You cannot do them in a meeting room or looking at film. Muscle memory is an important aspect of any player's performance that 2-a-days helps to quickly get you prepared for the season.

My understanding (I think I read this somewhere about the new changes, so my apologies if I'm wrong) is that there will be an extension of the practice dates, so there will still be time for the teams to implement their schemes and work on the field. Again, I could be wrong on this, but I'll try to find where I read that.

EDIT: this article is a take on the new rule, but at least is has it spelled out. http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index....d_the.html

RE: NCAA bans summer 2 a days
Serious question here.......did most schools even use 2-a-days anymore anyway?

I was under the impression this was a very rare thing to do anymore anyway.

No. You are correct. More than just a few years ago, the NCAA started limiting the amount of practice time, mandated recovery (down time) hours, etc. While 2-a-days had been permissible, most coaching staffs moved away from them a long time ago and instead used that time for film study, conditioning, etc.

2 a days are the worst, hated them, players will be fresher later in the season because of this and won't suffer from brutal cramping and unnecessary vomiting.

I'd also imagine, wink-wink, there will be plenty of "voluntary" workouts, passing ladders, unsupervised of course, good thing we have an absolute general at QB.

It'll be very similar to when the NFL limited the offseason contact so teams like the Redskins just meet with the coaches brother for a week of training
