2015 CDC data for males age 20-29

White 178.4 cm
5th 10th 15th 25th 50th 75th 85th 90th 95th (percentile)
168.0 170.0 171.5 173.3 178.2 183.0 185.3 187.0 189.0
Black 176.9 cm
166.4 168.2 170.1 172.4 176.4 181.4 183.8 186.1 187.9
Hisp 171.1 cm
159.0 161.7 163.5 165.6 170.9 176.3 179.2 181.9 185.0

No data for Asians ... I suspect huge variance with age. Young Asian males are often significantly taller than their parents.

Whites being a little taller than blacks fits my experience. Hispanics look shifted down a 5% set or two. But what is striking on Whites and Blacks is the closeness and overlap. That strongly points to cultural factors being the primary driver in athletics.

Immigrants from less developed countries are smaller. But how much is genetic and how much is diet I have no clue. My own WAG is the variance in height is greater now than ever among developed peoples. My suspicion is in less developed places with poorer diets those with the genetic predisposition to grow taller will not get triggered in a bare subsistence diet in childhood. But with a richer diet those differences become pronounced. My family is one where the males averaged 5' 5" in Scotland up through the 1800s. But in the United States the offspring averaged about 6' 2", even before we mixed in German, French, and Chinese blood. But this is just one family, statistically meaningless.

I'd say it's more to do with the fact there aren't any large cities other than Louisville. And they'd be one of if not the the smallest in the majors.

You're out of your mind. NC has more major titles and a much bigger well of local talent to draw from. You can't just claim to be the bwtree basketball state when more of your talent is imported.

UofL and UK consistently are among the top 5 nationally in attendance for decades. Louisville was also named the top rated ESPN NCAA Basketball market for the 15 straight year. The NCAA Tournament also gets its biggest ratings in Louisville

Not to mention the next largest population center in Kentucky is actually the suburbs of Cincinnati, which has the Reds and Bengals. There are over 360,000 people in the 3 counties south of Cincinnati, just not concentrated in one city.

What's that got to do with anything? Are we talking about actual success / contribution to the product on the court or what?

Louisville is arguably in its own right a blue blood basketball program, probably in the Top 10 of all programs. Right in the same exact state as UK. The only comparable college football has is Florida/Florida State but that is pretty explainable with all of talent in the state of Florida.

Western Kentucky has through its history accomplished more than almost any true mid major program between NCAA berths and a Final Four. They'll not infrequently land a Top 100 recruit and have the talent to be an at-large entrant to the NCAA tourney.

Murray State is one of the very most dominant low majors with 15 NCAA tournament appearances in its history.

Northern Kentucky moves up to the Horizon League and boom the next thing they've made the NCAA tourney.

What is magical about basketball in the state of Kentucky that makes this possible?

Because other then the Kentucky Derby - there is NOTHING ELSE to do for 11 months a year - oh and drink whiskey too.

Kentucky is not the holy grail of basketball. In fact, like everywhere else in America, it is not even a basketball state but a football one. Even Indiana and North Carolina have transitioned over to football first states. The only area of the country that isn't football fire :(at least for high school and college) is New York and New England.
