Instead of practically giving tickets away to save face come bowl season, you could actually generate demand and sell at a premium bowl tickets for venues like this. We want to go to bowl games with a great atmosphere, not hollowed half empty stadiums.

You are absolutely correct. A few years ago Major League Baseball made a conscious decision to move to smaller stadiums. Today, MLB's stadium sizes range from 31,042 at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg, FL (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) to the old Dodger Stadium, which has a capacity of 56K. But 7 MLB stadiums have a capacity of under 40K, and only two Stadiums (Yankee Stadium and Dodger Stadium) are over 50K.

Look no further than Atlanta:

Turner Field opened 1997: 51k seats

Suntrust Park opened 2017: 41k seats

I think we'll see a similar movement in the NFL, though maybe not for another 10-20 years.

More and more sports are about TV and less about fans at the game.

It is become less about the fans at the game......but that can be turned into a positive. Smaller programs who rely on their for affluent fans will be less concerned about filling empty seats at an over sized stadium just to save face on tv and more concerned with creating a valuable experience that can be better enjoyed for a premium. Tulane is doing this and I feel like Tech in a way has started doing this. We shrank our stadium and added more premium seating. This makes our seats more valuable since there is a more limited supply. Bowl games should be treated even more so like a valuable experience instead of an exhibition game in a random town.

RE: Miami Beach bowl moving?
LA Chargers are going to be playing games at Stub Hub Center, albeit temporarily, which was built for the LA Galaxy and has a capacity of 30K for Chargers games. Debate the merits of the move if you want, but the fact is that an NFL team looked at the landscape in LA and determined that it could be satisfied with that capacity until their stadium is finished in 2019. For a team that struggled to fill a 50K stadium, they're probably going to sell out more games and create demand while waiting for the new stadium to be built.

I think playing mid-lower tier bowl games like this in smaller stadiums is a fantastic idea.

Actually , the Citadel's stadium in Charleston, SC would be a good fit for a bowl game. Seats about 25,000 and has great hotels and eating establishments within walking distance of the campus. 04-cheers

Ironically, I google that yesterday. My Uncle played under Bobby Ross there for a single season.

Myrtle Beach would be another good location and I'm sure the tourism folks their would embrace the game during the slow season. When is the new bowl game moratorium over? Maybe an existing bowl game could move in to fill the eastern void.

The Bahamas Bowl could be moved there possibly.

Bahamas Bowl isn't going anywhere unless Atlantis gets bored with it.

FIU stadium is not really ready for a bowl game yet. They dont have enough restaurants and hotels nearby, also their stadium capacity is only about 23,000.
Bahamas bowl is about 15,000 but their stadium is state of the art.

The reason why Boca Bowl has done so well is that its right in the middle between
West Palm and Fort lauderdale airports and the university is in a upper middle class suburban area and is easy to get in and out of. Theres also half a dozen reputable hotels within 3 miles of the campus.

FIU is near miami international but most people dont want to fly into Miami International Airport if they can avoid it. In the past it has been rated one of the worst airports in the country.

The new ODU stadium with individual seats and full amenities is on schedule for opening of Phase I in 2019 with 22,000 seats. How does a new bowl in Norfolk sound to you guys?

Said it a few times but obviously there has to be interest from the city before it can happen - a bowl game in Chattanooga at 20k seat Finley Stadium would be a welcome destination for the East division. It's getting old playing bowl games on the moon, etc.

Chilly in December.

If they can play bowls in Boise, NYC and Annapolis, they can play one in Norfolk. And it really doesnt get cold here until late January and early February.

Chilly in December.

Having lived in the Dallas area and in Hampton Roads (Nofolk, Viginia Beach, Chesapeake area), I can vouch that it will be as good or better than Dallas in late December. I can remember some absolutely freezing Cotton Bowl games. Houston / Notre Dame comes to mind, when the temperature was in the high teens or low twenties..

Outside of Florida, Arizona and Cali, good weather is marginal in December period. I have sat in some nasty #$%% in Shreveport during the Indy bowl. Unless its a bowl and in the above states, you are gonna have to worry about the weather.

Yeah, I thought about it but was too busy to add when I hit send. Hawaii too. But the point is still the same. I spent a summer semester in DC and loved the weather. But I doubt I would appreciate it as much late December, sitting in a stadium.

You can add southern Alabama to that list...high 50s to mid 60s. Hope one day CUSA can get in on both of the bowls in Southern Alabama....

Both a easy two hour drive to PC Beach and really nice condos for under $100 a day or average/clean hotel for as little as $40 a night...beach front. We spent 5 out of the last 7 Christmas & New Years in Panama City Beach...2 weeks for under $500 total. These rooms rent for $180 up starting next month...that's a night. Spend a week at the beach/fishing/golf (mini golf for me) and drive over on game day.

Can't beat that for a low tier bowl and a lot easier talking the family into using vacation time and money...than Frisco Tx. But so was Miami and why Western had 7+k at that game and only 13 k for a conference championship. Fans...can't figure them out.

Norfolk would be a pretty cool place for a bowl. Not much around campus, but downtown and the oceanfront are nice. Too cold to swim, but golf is still a possibility and rock fishing in the bay is at its peak. Theres also all the historic triangle stuff too. I wouldn't put it past the area to really embrace it, maybe even with a parade, navy jet flyover, or fireworks etc. It could be a reasonably big deal if there were regional teams, even if ODU wasn't one of them. Put a Marshall or Charlotte against Temple, ECU, Navy, Liberty, App St or Coastal and I would think it would have a pretty full stadium.
