The first couple clips Shawn is playing with Jonas Helborg on bass and Jeff Sipe on drums. Jonas is one of the best bassist on planet Earth, and Jeff Sipe is just mind boggling on drums. The first time Jeff Sipe played with Shawn and Jonas was at Murphy's on Madison. It was their first gig on a US tour. Next night was at Ole Miss. Jonas was not willing to play with someone he had never heard of (Jeff) and wanted to cancel the gig at Murphy's and keep looking. Kofi Baker (Ginger Baker's Son) was the drummer they had been gigging with, but he was not able to leave England due to a last minute, but long term passport problem. This was not just for the one gig at Murphy's but for someone who could do the entire tour.

Shawn called every drummer he knew and nobody could play. He called Corner Music in Nashville looking for a possible drummer. Jeff Sipe was at Corner Music and his drum kit was already loaded in his car. He headed to Memphis unknown to Shawn or Jonas at the time. Hours later he arrived at Murphy's and set up his drums and waited for Shawn and Jonas. Cell phones were not as yet a common item.

When Jonas and Shawn reluctantly went to tell them at Murphy's they might not be able to play they saw the drum kit. Ginger (Murphy's owner) did not know Jeff nor where he was. He had gone to get a bite to eat.

When he arrived at Murphy's, Shawn was elated but Jonas was not in favor of playing with Jeff. Especially since Jeff was not familiar with any of their sets.

Well after some convincing Jonas agreed and they played. All improv, all instrumental. Jonas was stunned to the point where he just wanted to sit down and just watch Jeff play. It was SRO at Murphy's and the crowd as it turns out was mostly some of the Memphis musicians who got wind of the gig and flocked to Murphy's. It was like they had been playing together for years. They ended up calling Kofi and told him that Jeff was the new drummer. They were one of the most remarkable trios ever.

Most have never heard of Andy James. He is probably best known as the guitarist for Sacred Mother Tongue. When he is not playing heavy metal power rifffs he can play some very clean melodic tunes such as these.

This is basically the type of improv they played the first night they played at Murphy's with Jeff Sipe. Jeff did things and made sounds on the drums I had never seen before. Jonas said the same thing. If you want to see Jonas killing it in a solo jump to the 11:40 mark. Insane.

This ain't Rock but it sure brings back a lot of great memories of college nights at Ernie's on Park Ave.
