Bowls Layoff
Just think- Fournette and McCaffery skipped their bowl games- and got taken in the top 8 of the draft. Didn't hurt their status at all. Think we're going to start to see more and more guys skip bowl games- up to and including non playoff CFP games.

Trubisky had a pretty poor bowl game showing and he was selected 2nd. Scouts know one game doesn't make or break a player.

RE: Bowls Layoff
For these guys it wasn't about playing well/poorly in a bowl affecting draft potion. It was about staying healthy to get that high draft pick. They skipped the bowls to eliminate the risk of getting hurt playing in a meaningless game and losing BIG $. This is the age of top athletes skipping all-star games so as to not risk getting hurt. It shouldn't surprise anybody that this trend trickled down to the college ranks.

It makes perfect rational economic sense for a projected top NFL draft pick to skip a non-CFP bowl. There's basically all downside risk if there's an injury and no upside.

Of course, if players started getting a financial bonus for playing in a bowl in the same manner as their coaches, they might think differently.

Heck, there's no upside to playing in a CFP bowl either, from a financial POV.

The only upside would be the visceral pride of playing for a national title.

I agree.

I also think this will help lead to the expansion of the college football playoff from 4 teams as bowl games gradually become a remnant of a bygone era.

Agreed. The non-NY6 bowl games are going to be treated more and more as minor little exhibitions, of very little interest outside of the hardcore fanatics.

People keep saying this, and yet ... there were more bowls during the two-team playoff (BCS) era than during the historical poll/bowl era, and there are more bowls now than during the BCS era.

So it seems as the playoffs expand, the bowls expand as well. 07-coffee3

Directly, no. But whereas not playing in a de facto exhibition game apparently won't hurt your standing with pro teams, I wonder what the impact would be if someone left the team before a CFP game. It's one thing to walk away when there's nothing other than a trophy at a random bowl on the line, it's another entirely to walk away from a national championship, and I'd think that franchises that have no issue with the former would be more disturbed by the latter.

Given how they overlook personality flaws, I doubt it. They don't care about Alabama's MNCs. They care about the Super Bowl.

Players whose draft status is secure can afford to skip the Sun Bowl or the Music City Bowl, or the NIT in basketball. To use a poker analogy, they are already holding a winning hand and don't need another card.

Many will want to keep playing because they like their college teammates and just like competing, but some will follow the lead of these guys who skipped out on a bowl game.

Wait til a pro prospect skips the NCAA tournament where his team is a #1 seed. Or when a prospect skips the college football playoff. Will it be ok then?

I know that. I'm saying by playing in one last game to improve one's stock doesn't justify the risk. It's one game and a great or poor performance isn't going to outweigh the body of work.

RE: Bowls Layoff
If you have plans to throw your hat in the ring of the NFL draft, there is no incentive worthwhile for you to play in a any bowl game, period. This line of thought will dominate in the near future. As of today, there is still some semblance of amateur pride and collegiality left in the game - only some. The rest is pure ego to showcase your value to the team. Didn't Jake Butt get injured in a bowl game nad cost himself a lot of money as a result?
