It gets really old and a huge turnoff to sports in general. If I have to listen to people praising athletes for sitting during the national anthem, it is my time to quit watching sports. Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and NBC sports typically stay to sports. It isn't surprising that they are losing viewers with this crap.

Yep. I used to keep espn on as background noise. Not anymore. Just because people are cutting the cord doesnt mean their content doesn't suck. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Even if you dont cut the cord if you dont watch their ratings suffer. Bad ratings equals less ad dollars.

This. I would have MTV on in the background when they played music videos (yeah I'm old enough to remember that). As I grew older I did this for ESPN when they showed random sports throughout the day and summed it up with Sports Center at the end.

Now ESPN just grown men yelling about the performance of boys play sports. The height of stupidity.

Now I just have SkyNews playing gently in the background....

What is the slant of Sky News? I travel a lot international, and have CNN International on in the background. Believe it or not, Russia Today is a decent english speaking travel option. It certainly is less slanted than CNN International.

RT and Al Jazeera ain't bad honestly. They do some in-depth reporting that your not going to find on American news.

I haven't really detected a left or right slant with SkyNews...

Al Jazeera is a very good english speaking option. I will check out SkyNews.

Anything is better than CNNI. It is so overtly Leftist that it concerns me, as that is the main source of American news for most Western ExPats overseas.

I didn't catch that one. Look, the options are slim when in the Middle East, North Africa, or Europe. You have to take what you can get. I am saying it is good for just getting info, and they don't have a lot of talking heads.

Bingo. And that's the stretch I think fanhood was trying to make.

If anyone thinks these layoffs won't impact our next contract value, they're dead wrong.

Ah...that's it! They're laying people off so they can increase our next TV contract. 03-idea

More ESPN Layoffs
I think " one American news " or is it " American news one" , they seem to be in the middle, please correct me if Iam wrong because I've been known to watch " CCTV", they sometimes have good stories and it's in English not Chinese, just don't expect to see them report a protest in Tina min square and the weather reports have good music sounds

"Massacre"?

LOL.... ESPN has 4000 employees. They laid off 2.5%... just about every tech company lays off the bottom 5% of their employees annually. No one writes a single article on those annual "super massacres"? "employment armageddons"?

Heck I was at Dell when it was the bottom 20% every year

I've heard horror stories about IBM managers keeping a list of their bottom 5% that could be let go at any moment. Made for an interesting work environment I've been told.

This is why i refuse to work a corporate job.

or you could just not be in the bottom 5%. I hear ya as I'm making plans for my own business... but part of taking care of yourself is doing all you can to not be in that situation. Problem with these ESPN talking heads is that they're easily replaceable. They have young folks lined up who would gladly work for less and produce the same results 9 times out of 10.

Yea this is big. You're fooling yourself if you think differently. Its also somewhat out of their control due to the cost of subscription going down while they already have the rights to programming such as NBA, NFL, CFB, etc. The cost for the rights are going up while ESPN is losing millions upon millions of subscribers which in turn drastically reduces their profits. They didn't layoff janitors, they laid off some of their top talent. Also, it's going to get worse. Fees will go down and rights will go up. Thus putting ESPN back to normal as opposed to being able to print money. They paid too much for the NBA, Longhorn NW, & a few others. So they will still make money but no where near what they used to. So look out for ESPN to be very conservative over the next decade.

Ehh. This Wed the ESPN news was layoffs! What people missed was LAST Wed ESPN was buying another bowl game.

The truth is, nobody watched or subscribes to ESPN to watch talking head shows. It was an easy place to cut dead weight. Yes, ESN will be forced to be more careful with money going forward, but they aren't going to be shy about trying to keep every sports property they can---because live game actins IS why people watch and subscribe to ESPN.

The World Leader in sports will try to maintain their near monopoly position in sports. Other networks---recognizing that ESPN's massive catalogue of sports rights has made it the most highly compensated cable network in the nation, will try to steal some of those properties in an effort to increase the value of their own networks. Competitive bidding for conferences that offer great bang for the buck should be particularly aggressive as these are the properties that are priced where more networks can bid and are not likely to ever become a financial albatross.
That's one way to look at it. IMHO it's 50/50 which way it could go. They're not going to keep throwing money around for the hell of it.

It's exactly the reason why I quit watching ESPN. I could not stand the politics that they keep putting on their shows. It is also the reason why I have no problem seeing ESPN fail I hope they go out of business personally.

Me too. I've been saying for years that I want espn to Hurt. Some say payback never truly satisfies, but I disagree. After what they did to my school (labeling us 2nd class citizens) I want bad things to happen to them.

Exactly. I would be overjoyed to see them circling the bowl.

What i think people are failing to acknowledge is judge how big free online streaming has gotten.

As is millennials hate paying for tv and now there is a study out that millennials also hate paying for streaming. So they are turning to the dark web were you can watch any channel you wants free 24/7 live.

I really think espn is pulling a blockbuster by simply blaming it on the content and partially cord cutting. The fact that disney even mentioned a possibility of a world with no tv for espn is surprising to me, maybe they are somewhat starting to see the problem.

Free streaming is predicted to explode in the next two year as more and more millennials decide they want their content free and turn to online streaming to avoid paying.
yeah Google "Amazon fire stick jailbreak"
