The ESPN contract is the biggest downfall of the MAC and what is hurting NIU the most.

I agree, that along with the lack of state budget has made it hard for NIU to even try to adapt and provide solutions to such a terrible TV contract. I would also include declining admissions in the equation. Really it's been a perfect storm of crap, and right now it's hard to even see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I completely agree. However, I find it funny that we are complaining about national TV and streaming coverage when just a few years ago, we had no TV whatsoever (except for an occasional game once a year on Sports Vision). Radio coverage was terrible unless you lived in the DeKalb/Sycamore area. No Chicago station would ever carry our games (because we did not pay them). If you lived in Chicago or the South Suburbs, you had to have the radio facing west, put aluminum foil on the antenna, and then put your ear up to the speaker to barely hear Bill Baker through the hiss. My, how times have changed!

RE: Applications are being accepted for the Huskie Fan Advisory Board
There is another LARGE problem that has gone on for years and years. That is, NIU Athletics ignores or disdains the "Casual fan." In its obsessive search for the unicorn of a base of 30,000 season ticket holders, it pays little to no attention to the casual fan. That is a problem. The proof of that is in the results. Donors and season ticket holders should be able to expect somewhat special treatment, but you need a multi-prong approach. Disregard the "casual fan" and your fan base not only will not grow, it will shrink over the years.
I have followed the Huskies almost religiously for more than a couple of decades (ugh!). In that time, I have had season tickets 2 or 3 years. I have attended anywhere from every home game and a road game or two in a season some years, to one or two some years depending on life events. My conclusion drawn over the years is that I DO NOT MATTER TO NIU Athletics. ( I failed to mention that some years I have brought groups of over 30 others with me to games.) Those are facts. Now even this Fan Advisory Board seems to ask for season ticket holders and donors to step forward. That, in my humble opinion, is a mistake.

Very, very true. And, trust me, they ignore some of the bigger donors, too. I speak from experience.

They had good people in the athletic office that left. When no one answers the phone at the HAF for 2 days and you get a voicemail that sounds like it was left on a 1980 speaker phone that is telling. Finally took an email and even that was given to someone else to call me back. If there was internal issues, you just don't close up shop near a deadline. I had individuals go out of there way to meet someone on my behalf to deliver tickets for the OSU game a few years back due to an internal issue with the ticket office. I had a few calls and emails even at a very low giving level just to see what was going on. If anything similar in ignoring those at a much higher level then they need to shake things up for it to get better. As others have eluded to, may be nice to have an advisory board but fans, especially donors, shouldn't have to join a board to tell the department what to do and how to treat people, namely themselves!

RE: Applications are being accepted for the Huskie Fan Advisory Board
I agree that improvements can be made however it must be hard to have personal contact with every donor and season ticket holder with such a small staff. In my experience, staff members have been helpful. The full time staff is always personable and helpful. It would be even harder to build a relationship with a casual fan that isn't signed up as a donor or season ticket holder. It would be great if more causal fans can become die-hards but that isn't easy. Now, there have been times I've been frustrated as well but we have to realize that these are very small staffs. Many of the employees in the ticket office are students and usually not very helpful. Staff cuts have made things even worse. Not sure what the right answer is but this seems like a great idea. With less staff, allowing fans to brain storm can only help.

We have to ride out this very bad financial situation. Staffs all over the university are short, meaning workloads for the people left have increased ten fold. They need to focus on staying afloat, and not just athletics. Once stability is back, hopefully soon, things should get better.

+1. I don't think any AD could dig a hole out of that one.

I know it's a day before the deadline to apply, but has anyone who applied heard anything yet? I'm interested if people from this board will be on the committee. And no, I did not apply. I would not want to be on any committee that selects me.

I was going to, and did not. Mainly because the "Application" is discouraging.
Yet, at this prompting, I now did. Let's see.

I did not apply, but let's just say that my app would have either made them blush or relish it over and over while smoking a cigarette and sipping on a cup of coffee. Of course, I would have attached compromising photos of myself.

I can only imagine Dogfan's suggestions. Particularly about bringing the Grotto back.

For years, I have been telling Athletics that they need a Grotto satellite facility under Huskie Stadium. For those interested in taking their eyes off the Grotto movies (why, I don't know), there could be TV screens showing the action on the field. It could be set up like tailgating with little and big wieners for consumption (just be careful of the condiments). Athletics can sell memberships to the Grotto as part of season ticket packages. Everyone is happy and will leave Huskie Stadium with smiles on their faces whether the Huskies win or lose. Think of the national exposure (so to speak)! Now THAT's how you increase attendance!!
