It had to be a combination of reasons IMHO.

Well, OM will have a better shot than us, but certainly no sure thing.

I have no idea, so I'm just asking here. Could the looking over his shoulder comment be talking about Tubby and not playing time?

Addition by subtraction... a phrase that has become part of Memphis and... uh has never worked as well as the addition by subtraction screamers have thought.

A lot of truth in this post.

This is a ridiculous statement. How in the world was he looking over his shoulder? He played a ton of minutes. And there wasn't anyone on the bench that would be pushing him to take his minutes. Joe Jackson played four years looking over his shoulder for a coach who couldn't manage his players or get along with them at all. All I can say is, I'm glad I'm not listening to the daily beat down of our program and our coach. What really gets me is for 7 years everyone on the radio (almost) I do remember Peter E. blasting Josh early in the morning before Wolo came on, other than that I don't know of any harsh criticism coming from anyone. Certainly not Jason S., Not John M., not Gary P., the late George L., they all treated Josh with kiddie gloves. He's so nice. He's the nicest guy. Everyone loves Josh. Nobody blames Josh. He's so nice. He's such a nice guy. Over and over and over for 7 years.

Completely agree. The more that comes out, the more I realize what has happened needed to happen. We had losers on this roster. Mentally weak and way too much entitlement. The witch hunt has also gotten old

Which witch hunt? I count four. Markel, GP, Tubby, Stanley.

The witch hunt is Gary parish and his ugg boots hunting down Tubby Smith. He needs to let it go. Tubby isn't going anywhere this year. I'm with Joe. He should have done that to pastner years ago

Gary is more irritated that Tubby doesn't give him the time of day, doesn't listen to him. I personally think communication between those two broke down after the UCF game at Memphis when Tubby saw GP wearing Ugg Boots in public

RE: Markel Crawford on Jason and John show
In the modern age, one of the coach's distasteful duties (at times) is to cultivate a good relationship with the media. It is an important because it helps advance the program, but Tubby refuses to hold his nose and accommodate the media. Norvell does a splendid job with the media so we know it is not an impossible task.

A recurring theme with Tubby is his insistence on doing what he wants and how he wants to do it regardless of damage caused or missed opportunities incurred.

I understand it from Tubby's perspective. He is a rich senior citizen. He does not want to deal with the likes of GP and Calkins (who would?) so he doesn't.

RE: Markel Crawford on Jason and John show
Senior transfers are happening everywhere, so the shock of this free agency in college sports is no longer new. But, for a 4 year Memphis Tiger BB player to transfer to f'ing ole miss (of all places) to finish his basketball career is inexcusable as a former Tiger. Yes it's his choice, and I understand that and could totally understand his pick if it were a high major basketball school with a REAL chance to go to the NCAA's. But ole miss? WOW!

Who really thinks we will be better w/out him? I don't think under normal circumstances that he should be the best player on the team. Just b/c I view him as more of a role player doesn't mean I don't want him on the team. He was the one that didn't want to be here.

I have no issue with Crawford going to the Black Bears. It is an SEC school close to home where he will have an opportunity to earn minutes.

My issue is with Tubby not fully engaging Crawford (like Norvell did with Avery) and persuading him to stay when Tubby does not have a better player lined up to take Crawford's place.

Possibly true, but that's your opinion. It's not like we had great guard play last year. I don't want to beat up on those guys, but it wasn't pretty. Memphis has a long tradition of good guard play and last year fell well short of the average.

Markell signed up to play for Pastner...not Tubby...I wish him well at Ole Miss and I hope he finds what he's looking for.

Agree, it is my opinion and not fact.

My opinion is based on replacing an experienced starter with a 3 * Frosh or JUCO. The newcomer(s) must equal or exceed Crawford's production of:
1. Starting every game
2. 32.4 min per game
3. 12.8 PPG (2nd on team)
4. 4.4 Rebound per game (3rd on team)
5. 75.8% FT (lead starters)
6. 33.3% three point (mediocre but still lead the team)
7. Noted Defensive Ability.

Exactly.

Like it or not, that is a different world. Sure, our bball players are pampered, probably more than he will get there, but he gets to play road games at the likes of Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, LSU, instead of our road opponents, and be a member of a rich athletic department and enjoy the sweet living that goes along with that.

Of course, as someone stated above, I hope he averages 20 and they lose every game.

It very well could be that a combination of players at the 2 reach those numbers. I anticipate we will have a better rotation next year.

Tubby is probably the most respected coach by the media that we've had since Bartow - certainly since Finch. Pastner was a goofy kid to the national media. Cal was a pariah - at least until he got to UK. Tic - they hardly knew. Finch was respected because he was a local hero. Kirk was not too well-liked.

Tubby's reputation nationally is pretty solid. At the same time, he doesn't appear to be too engaging with Calkins or GP. Even so, you're painting with a broad brush there.

I cannot reasonably conceive of a worse rotation than last year, but cannot rule out Tubby's ineptitude (e.g., defeats by margins not seen in decades), either.
