Aspire Survey Findings: "Day and time of games and weather are some of the most important factors in fans attending games since fans seem to fit EMU football games into their schedule rather than adjusting their schedule."

Further confirmation that these weekday MAC games are a big problem as far as attendance goes.

The one thing I saw which could be telling is the 'Oak Society', major donors, 35 members so far.

Does this equate to the 10M in pledges for athletic facilities????

I hate to sound snarky but anyone who follows G5 FB knows this...

Weeknight games are 'made for TV' (not for fans attending games).

Especially bad for the MAC. Our last 5 games:

Thursday at NIU
Thursday Home vs Ball State
Wednesday at Central
Wednesday at Miami
Tuesday Home vs Bowling Green

Really laughable. Terrible for the players as well, with mid-week travel, class disruptions, etc.

http://www.hustlebelt.com/2014/8/19/6045...pn-tv-deal

If this article is correct about the payouts, ESPN really did a number on the MAC. 670K per school, per season? The game NIU just added next season against FSU pays them 1.6 million! Would much rather add 1 more P5 paying road game, and have Saturday MAC games, than this mid-week nonsense.

Is what it is, but really bad for anyone directly associated with the program, parents, and fans who actually like going to the games.

Sorry, my rant is done.

ETough, I agree with you 100%!

The BoR and Athletic Department are probably basing this non-fan friendly schedule on exposure for EMU. Did you read that the bowl exposure was equal to $6M in advertisement??

Even so, we need to move MAC Football to Saturdays!!!

So the media types want us to believe a single bowl game was worth 6 million.....while on the flip side they've apparently convinced our BoR and athletic dept. that the entire rest of our season is only worth 670k? Haha.

And the worst part is the MAC leadership has locked us into this crappy deal until 2027!!! Without obviously knowing a lot of the details, it seems strange they would want to make such a long commitment, especially with how quickly the media landscape is changing. 670K seems a very small amount for getting handcuffed for the next 10 years.

Hopefully there are some outs in the deal, and we didn't just get bullied by ESPN.

I have a feeling that opposition to this deal, and this scheduling, will continue to grow every year this continues.

The ESPN deal will grow in value over the last 10 years of the contract. $833,333 per school.

Not saying that makes the deal worth it. Just adding that info.

The deal is about $ and exposure just as the Bahamas Bowl was worth '6M' in exposure.

No TV = no relevance.

No big announcements? (I didn't read any, anyway).

Does that mean that we still do not have a deal for athletic facilities and they are mixed with academic buildings and fund raising?

Keep waiting for the next (and next) Regents meetings?

For those who think EMU athletics is flush with money.

We technically lost 200K on the Bahamas Bowl but covered that with the monies we got thanks to WMU's Cotton Bowl game.

So you really think these mid-week ESPN games have made EMU football or the MAC more relevant? I would argue not one bit.

The only thing that anyone noticed about the MAC this year was the Broncos historic run. A few years back it was NIU. Toledo and BG have been ranked recently as well I believe.

This little bit of relevance would have been there with or without mid-week ESPN games.

Our fanbase is tiny as it is, and we'll certainly never have national relevance. My whole point remains, 5 mid-week games are a net negative for EMU. Creighton and Lyke put together this whole blue collar/grey field theme to represent the area and try to get more locals, students, and local alums interested in the program. If we put together 3 or 4 winning seasons I think it might be possible to get 15-20k butts in the seats for EMU home games on Saturday nights. I would argue these mid-week games make that impossible.

It really is a fun atmosphere, inexpensive, and a great way to spend a Saturday night with the EMU community. I'll just try to enjoy it while it lasts.

Nobody on earth thinks EMU, or any other MAC program, is flush with money.

Lost 200k? Wait, they told us we gained 6 million in 'exposure'. 05-stirthepot

That exposure was good.

6M isn't a huge amount even in terms of intangibles.

BUT if other G5 schools get 6, 12, or 18M in exposure from bowl games and we get Zero that is a PROBLEM.

ETough - well written and I agree with you. I am wondering if we really obtain $6M in TV exposure??? I believe if a MAC school is on TV with a small attendance due to a weekday game, that might equate to negative exposure.

Move games to Saturdays!!!
