I think they will still be a pretty good team. Their recruiting class is stacked... 2 5-star guys, 2 4-star guys, and 2 3-star guys, plus Holiday returning. I could seem them being anything from an NIT team to top 20 at this point. I don't think they will be a national title contender though.

I wonder if the renovated 5/3 Arena will help bring in better opponents. I'm not sure how important that sort of thing is to high-level out-of-conference opponents, but it certainly can't hurt.

Also, when was the last time we actually got a blue blood (or at least elite program) to come to Cincinnati? I'm not counting any of the former Big East schools since we were conference mates.

I didn't realize we had already rescheduled the game at 5/3 against UCLA. That's good news.

Dates for the UCLA basketball games have not been announced yet , only that we are there next year and they are at UC the following year . Using Dec as typical OOC games (could be any time I guess)

Oops, sorry I was distracted by work and was going between two threads. For some reason I was thinking about the cancelled 2016 Michigan game.

Come on, man. Work!? You gotta get your priorities in order! 04-rock

I know, right? I'm going to have to have a talk with my boss about allotting more time for browsing Bearcat Banter.

Does Oklahoma FB count? I didn't realize the package included football too. That's great!

The College BB Blue Blood's are most universally considered to be UCLA, UK, Kansas, Indiana, Duke and North Carolina*. With that in mind the last Blue Blood to come here was Indiana in 1992 (we lost to the Hoosiers).

* Some argue UConn and Louisville are Blue Bloods but they would be in the minority. If you believe they are then obviously UConn's last game here earlier this year would be the last time.

Only thing that scares me is both of the games @ UCLA occur before any return matches in Cincinnati. We've seen big time programs bail on us in both sports before. I hope the buyout is YUUUGE!

Yeah, that's why I excluded former Big East schools like UConn, Louisville, and Syracuse. They aren't necessarily blue bloods, but they are among a few schools that have been elite in recent decades that would really excite me. Arizona, Michigan State, Gonzaga, Florida, and Wisconsin also come to mind. I don't know how realistic it is to get any of those types of schools to Cincinnati, but if we can get UCLA, it's certainly possible. I would also be pumped for almost any of our former Big East conference mates, specifically Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Villanova. Marquette would be great as well.

That said, there are probably a hundred college basketball programs I would happily accept a home-and-home with. I'm all for playing top 100 RPI teams, even if they aren't glamorous names. Just try to avoid the dregs of the MEAC and Atlantic Sun, please and thank you.

Maybe, but both are also major UA schools. This is great news.

Some other big UA schools that would make some sense....
Utah
Cal
Wisconsin (heavily recruit Ohio)
South Carolina (Frank Martin)

God, a Cincinnati-Wisconsin game would UGLY.

Given that a lot people in Cincinnati and Wisconsin share Germanic heritage, I always thought the two schools should play more frequently in all sports. Quite a few Wisky fans made the trip back in 1999 when we played in football-- IIRC that game was played during Oktoberfest weekend so a lot of them found there way down there.

Agree. I hope, by now, UC is well-versed in such contingencies.

I like it! Badger fans bring the cheese from Wisconsin and we'll supply the pretzels and craft beers from OTR. It does have the makings of an interesting tie-in with Octoberfest. That was an amazing win against Wisconsin in a half-filled Nippert. Imagine the energy playing UW now in a sold out and rocking Nippert. Imagine is probably the right word too, unfortunately.

Why not? We got Nebraska on the schedule now... Why couldn't we get Wisky?

That's a big get...and no doubt will be a National TV Game to also help show off the new arena (odds are the game will take place in Nov/Dec).

I'm old and memories dim over time, but didn't UC open Pauley Pavilion with UCLA back in 1965?

No. The Cinci vs UCLA game on Dec 18th game was actually played at the LA Sports Arena as part of the LA Classic. Cinci won 82-76.

Some interesting notes of the first ever game at Pauley Pavilion:

(Remember, Freshmen were not eligible to play back then as all had to be redshirted for a season).

The first game ever played in Pauley Pavilion was on November 27, 1965. It featured the freshmen team, led by Big Lew Alcindor, against the UCLA varsity squad, the two-time defending champions and pre-season No. 1 team. The freshmen, led by Alcindor's 31 points and 21 rebounds, defeated the varsity team 75-60, heralding great things to come

First visiting team was Ohio State and UCLA trounced them.

Yes they did.

We had an interesting December schedule that year. In a two week period we played Colorado, Southern Cal, UCLA on the road trip and then came home to the Armory Fieldhouse to play Wisconsin, Utah and Wake Forest. Not many games against directional schools in that era.

Maybe a few games but most of their games thru 1964-1965 took place at their 2,400 seat Men's Gym.
