- NBC SN used to be a channel called Versus, which was owned by Comcast and had wide distribution on cable networks. When NBC and Comcast merged, the channel was rebranded as NBC SN.

- CBS SN actually started as an independent cable channel called College Sports TV, which was only carried on satellite to start. CBS eventually acquired them, but the focus on college sports & carrying smaller league games, as well as the the smaller distribution on cable networks, seems to have stayed intact from the former days.

Guess in both cases it's really more of apathy by the parent network, in just letting the respective channels keep doing what they were doing before, more or less.

If you are a fan of a former CUSA, MWC school, you know all about College Sports TV...they sucked. CBS-SN is a great broadcast, it's just hard to find.

221 on Direct TV. Not hard to find at all.
I spend a good bit of time on 220 (NBCSN) decent amount on 219 (FS1) and very little on 221 but that has more to do with what is being offered.

One thing about Versus is that while they had events like the Tour de France, which are lower ratings events, they also pull in a bit of a different demographic than ESPN. It's no accident that a lot of the Tour de France commercials are a mix of upscale automobiles and light beers being consumed by yuppies.

NBC has taken that approach to the OTA channel counter-programming sports against college football and NFL afternoon broadcasts and on NBCSN.

They show a lot of stuff that doesn't draw large audiences but valuable audiences that can be hard for advertisers to reach.

It is if you don't subscribe to the highest tier or don't have Direct TV.

Right. DirecTV -- that is, the DBS satellite pay-TV service, not the internet streaming pay-TV service that it has been rebranded as by AT&T -- has what 2x million subscribers?

That's not that many TV households, when you get down to it.

It'd be nice if there was a simple list of the top 50/100 (whatever) cable channels by number of TV households reached. Guessing CBSSN is well behind NBCSN, FS1, and ESPN2.

I get CBS-SN on Dish but have a mid-tier package with them. In any case the more eyeballs the better so hopefully CBS-SN can work on that. I have watched Army play several times on that network and the production quality is outstanding.
