I also wonder why CBS doesn't push harder for CBSSN to be on standard tiers with ESPN2 and FS1. I think it just doesn't have much big-ratings content, as it won't make competitive bids for them.

I don't get that either. Even NBC SN is on the basic tiers in quite a few packages.

By the way, here is an email response I got back from the Arizona Bowl rep regarding the streaming of the bowl.

CBS is considering live streaming the in their network. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for reaching out to us.

Alan

OK, after looking at the wikipedia pages for each, one possible explanation:

- NBC SN used to be a channel called Versus, which was owned by Comcast and had wide distribution on cable networks. When NBC and Comcast merged, the channel was rebranded as NBC SN.

- CBS SN actually started as an independent cable channel called College Sports TV, which was only carried on satellite to start. CBS eventually acquired them, but the focus on college sports & carrying smaller league games, as well as the the smaller distribution on cable networks, seems to have stayed intact from the former days.

Guess in both cases it's really more of apathy by the parent network, in just letting the respective channels keep doing what they were doing before, more or less.

It's hard to buy in to the idea that CBS has any bold vision of trying seriously grow CBSSN when they haven't used the leverage of the NCAA Tournament to get broader distribution.

If they had said they were showing X number of games on CBSSN they probably could have met whatever household carriage numbers NCAA would demand.

This sounds backwards.

I think that if CBSSN had met the NCAA's minimum requirement for channel carriage, then the NCAA would've let tournament games be shown on CBSSN. But since it doesn't, they had to partner with the TNT/TBS/True channels, as those channels do meet the minimum carriage requirements.

Once CBS and Turner partnered on the tournament, though, Turner wouldn't give up any of its allocation of games to do that.

You're right though that in general there are CBS events they could have pushed to CBSSN or shared with CBSSN - the Masters is a good example - but chose not to. They also chose not to make the kind of deals NBC made to get NBCSN into more households, or to buy up the kind of inventory that Fox bought for FS1.

It's as if CBS is only interested in having a sports channel just to say they have one.

If you are a fan of a former CUSA, MWC school, you know all about College Sports TV...they sucked. CBS-SN is a great broadcast, it's just hard to find.

CBSSN isn't utilized very well. What an opportunity to share your CBS Sports inventory.
