RE: Id love to see JMU in the CUSA
I'm still all about rivalries and the longer term. Who can truly elevate their program, like a Boise or UCF or Butler or VCU in basketball.
this would be my ideal conference out of the MAC, CUSA, SB mix. I'm excluding AAC and MWC teams because they aren't moving and we arent moving in there any time soon. Yes, it's 16 teams, but TV money is so small, slicing a small pie makes no difference. Creating rivalries and local interest as well as eliminating the competition (CUSA and SB overlapping is hindering both leagues) will make this more profitable.
New League East or North (paired with rival):
JMU, ODU
Marshall, Ohio
App St, Charlotte
WKU, MTSU
New League West or South
Ga Southern, UAB
So Miss, So Alabama
Arkansas St, Missouri St
La Tech, UL Lafayette
Other than Ga Southern and UAB, every school has a natural rival. one that is already bitter, or one that could easily develop.
Plus every school would have multiple secondary rivals that would pique its supporters interest.
All the schools are large publics with room to grow and have demonstrated success in a broad range of sports (no one trick ponies) and have supported their programs strongly both financially and with butts in the seats.
Teams left out:
All texas teams (Rice, N TExas, UTSA, UTEP, Tx State
Georgia St
Troy
Coastal Carolina
FIU
FAU
Liberty
UMass

RE: Id love to see JMU in the CUSA
I've seen several posters offer a dream regional G5. This can't be done without a rather long list of current FBS programs being tossed aside.
Can somebody explain to me how JMU, an fcs program can and would take a seat in a (presumably preferred by all) G5 conference in place of established fbs programs?
Are these to be left behind fbs programs going to roll over and play dead in fear when Jon Boy Alger and Jeffrey Bourne decide to join the party?

Because those teams tossed aside have established nothing.
Any shuffling is a chance to reset. And be with teams that can do something. Not teams based on an address.

As an example-Louisiana Monroe....so under the radar that they didn't even make your list, for the new or old conference. The point is though, some of these teams stink....and they are always going to stink. Their peak was 20 years ago, it's been all downhill since and there is NO upside. Time to jettison the low hanging fruit.

Agreed, in theory, a newcomer with new facilities, an established fan base, a large budget and an assertive admin may be able to garner an invite.
Our only hope may be relying on 3 out of 4 attributes.

The MAC would be a lot more appealing without the weeknight games.
Our attendance would suffer greatly if we played during the week.

Sorry if it's a repost. I think this interview from MH is the first public acknowledgement from a JMU employee that we did in fact have a sun belt invite and we turned it down. Maybe it isn't the first and I just missed something.

MH starts talking about the invite after the 8 minute mark. All we ever got from JMU was we never rec'd an invite. Then discussion erupted on this board about what constitutes an invite.(invite/acceptance). The only thing we heard was what the commish of the Sun Belt stated, "JMU wants to stay FCS"

Houston straight up says JMU turned down the sunbelt. Was that so hard? Bourne and Alger to this day still tell the lie which leads to questioning everything they say, liars lie.

I'd do it.....except those mid games. If it were only one home game a year, it might be okay- 2 home games is just unacceptable.
Has anyone taken the time to see if any of their teams play two mid-week home games? Even if they occasionally do, I would expect that to be much more the exception rather than the rule.
Assyrian Duke posted this in the Newest Conference Rumor thread. I believe this is for the 2017 season:
Akron - 3 Tuesday
Bowling Green - 3 Tuesday games, 1 Wednesday
Buffalo - 1 Tuesday, 2 Thursday, 1 Friday
Kent State - 3 Tuesday games, 1 Wednesday
Miami (OH) - 3 Tuesday games, 1 Wednesday
Ohio - 2 Tuesday, 1 Wednesday, 2 Friday
Ball State - 1 Tuesday, 4 Thursday
Central Michigan - 1 Tuesday, 2 Wednesday, 1 Thursday, 1 Friday
Eastern Michigan - 1 Tuesday, 2 Wednesday, 2 Thursday, 1 Friday
Northern Illinois - 1 Wednesday, 3 Thursday, 2 Friday
Toledo - 2 Wednesday, 3 Thursday, 1 Friday
Western Michigan - 3 Wednesdays, 1 Friday
Furthermore, some of the teams only have 2 home games on Saturdays in the entire season. Each team has 4 games in November, because what the week of Thanksgiving is still a regular season week in FBS, whereas it is Round 1 of the playoffs for FCS.
I had no idea is was even close to this. Wow!

Its got to be eating you guys alive to watch Liberty beat you to FBS.
I think most of JMU nation has resolved that until there is a new president who has a vision for FBS we will see little change for JMU athletics. I guess if a few high rolling donors were to push the issue we might see some movement, but there's no reason for any JMU fan to feel anything regarding what Liberty is doing. We know with leadership we could have made a jump a long time ago.
I think we have a chance of going FBS with Alger, but it isn't coming from our end. A conference will have to knock down our door and present a vision for the conference that will knock his backward cowboy hat off.
I think any conference BUT the Sun Belt they would at least entertain the idea. CUSA is in a very odd place right now, so while JMU fans would love to go, I think things would have to change before the admin pulled the trigger.
As for Liberty, we have NOTHING in common with them. While it sucks that they moved before us, they aren't in a good place.... which is nowhere. Lets put it this way... Georgia State is in a more stable FBS environment than Liberty. They sold their soul for a spot at the table and I don't see them having much success.
Plus its hard to feel eaten alive when we just won another national championship and it's looking pretty good for a repeat. Meanwhile, a program we've beaten over and over that has done nothing will continue to do nothing.
So..... yeah, I'm pretty okay with that.
Liberty and JMU have both had Division 1 athletics since the 1970's
Liberty and JMU are the only FCS schools with similar budgets
Liberty is one of the few FCS programs with facilities that rival JMU
Liberty and JMU share the same geographic footprint
Liberty and JMU have strong fan support for mid-major FCS programs and both fan bases aspire to be FBS
Liberty and JMU have both shown national success in Olympic sports programs and significant investment into their Olympic sports programs (like their baseball program that brags one of the nicest stadiums on the east coast and just kicked our ass 26-1).
Liberty and JMU both have plans for new state of the art basketball arenas and football stadium expansion plans to accommodate for 30,000 - 40,000 fans
So yea, other than basically the majority of our athletic department, we have nothing in common with Liberty. But I'm sure despite all their athletic accomplishments, and how nice it would be to have a regional rival that I believe we could dominate in a "rivalry" some still can't get past the unfair stereotypes of "Ohhh but they are just a online degree factory that loves Donald Trump and hates everyone that is not straight white Christians..."
I tire very easily of the JMU fans who are so quick to bash Liberty. No place I would rather visit for a rivalry game. Great facilities, easy to get to, friendliest fans around (other than NDSU). Would love to be in a conference with them, ODU, Charlotte, ASU, Marshall, Georgia Southern, Ohio, Delaware, Georgia State, Coastal Carolina. Everything would be driveable.

I have no problem with being in a conference with them either. There simply are not that many girls left at the dance to partner with. Gain some confidence with the ugly ones and then try to improve your standing.

If JMU is going to be FBS, I would bet that it would be in a conference with Liberty.
