Trei Cruz profiled on Channel 11 Sports Extra last night
Matt Musil did a segment on him. Boy does this kid remind me of his dad. Same build, and like Jose Jr. he is a switch hitter. Also like his Dad, he has a beautiful swing. What I like best was that he is such a well spoken, polite young man. Seems perfect for Rice. The only downer was at the end of the segment, when Musil stated that Trei was going to play at Rice, like his Dad, unless he gets drafted. That doesn't sound good. Then again, that may have just been him giving his own opinion. I'm hoping he did not hear that from either Jose Jr. or Trei.

I think Trei ends up at Rice. I think he's a draftable kid but not high enough to sway him from Rice. I do think after 3 years at Rice he will be drafted fairly high. He can play.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't follow his dad and uncle to Rice. Absolutely shocked. It's not as if the family is in financial need...and by all accounts, he's not a Top 3 round prospect.

His father should be the next baseball coach at Rice if he has any interest (04-24-2017 07:48 PM)waltgreenberg Wrote: I'd be shocked if he doesn't follow his dad and uncle to Rice. Why? No coaching experience whatsoever. I think the world of Jose Jr, but pass.

Much better to come to Rice and be the next Cruz or Gray, rather than skip Rice and be the next Thon.

Jose Jr. has a great job (he is a special assistant for the MLBPA for player services; others who have the same title are Bobby Bonilla, Jeffrey Hammonds, Rick Helling and Mike Myers). He's also a great fan of the athletic department with season tickets to men's basketball (maybe football too?). And of course is a big supporter of the baseball team.
I doubt he'd been interested in coaching. But he absolutely needs to be considered for any search committee that might form if we needed a new head coach. In my eyes, he's the catalyst who was our first high profile signee to help put Rice baseball on the map. He likely would have been a 1st round pick out of high school at Bellaire but his desire to go to Rice pretty much kept everyone outside of Atlanta from drafting him very high.

Actually Jose Sr. coached for the Astros, not Jose Jr. I think the fact that Wayne used to sometimes pitch batting practice for the Astros (while coaching at San Jac) helped cultivate the Graham-Cruz Sr. relationship, ultimately leading to sons Jose Jr. and Enrique coming to Rice. I agree with Fort Bend Owl - Jose Jr. coming to Rice was the signing that elevated us to Major Program status.
