Joe Karlgaard April podcast
The monthly podcast is out. I thought the interview with Tanner Gardner was particularly insightful, particularly given the re-branding and changes to online sales. He seems like a very good asset to the Rice Athletic Department.

Also, in discussing Wichita State's move to the AAC, Dr. Karlgaard threw cold water on my suggestion that Rice go independent in football:
Joe Karlgaard Wrote:We really didn't have a play in this situation because we have a comprehensive profile and we are really committed to having all of our teams in the same league.

I thought most of Kaarlgard's interview was full of platitudes.. Gardner much better.

Tanner is terrific. Not anyone of his caliber in a long time, if ever

I have been and continue to be much, much more impressed with Tanner than his boss.

I agree with everyone about Tanner. If JK leaves forget interviews and just promote him. Unfortunately I felt the same way about Saylor but instead we screwed the pooch big time when we let a small group decide that Greenspan was a better choice. Fortunately the way the department is run today Tanner has a very visible role something Saylor didn't have with CDC until CDC left.

I had an extended email conversation with Mr. Garner regarding football season tickets next year. As have others, I have decided not to buy tickets for football due to the retention of the current coach. He was very professional, polite and dedicated in his efforts to sell a very bad product. I was very impressed with him.

Tanner is truly a first class talent. I worked with him at BCG (strategy consulting) many years ago.

Impressive indeed. As he states in the article linked above, being "an AD of a school that is interested in being great at academics and athletics” is his ultimate goal. Hope it's here!
