A few words on baseball, giant American Flags and patriotism

I agree. Patriotism is the new marketing gimmick used in conjunction with sports to sell products. Also, there are people who do lambaste others for not having the bare minimum 16 pieces of flair to show they care.

Maybe the same people that hate flag displays also dislike military flyovers before games?

BTW, that looks to be the Atlanta Braves new park, SunTrust Park. Pretty sure all the pageantry was due the ballpark's grand opening.

Aside from the routine minority of people who equate America with imperial exploiters, who are these throngs of people who loathe the American flag displays, the flyovers, etc? You either enjoy it immensely, only moderately or you suffer thru it until the game starts. The bottom line is most give it little thought because it's so consistently pervasive anymore that it loses the overall impact. Most people no longer "see" the grand displays anymore. All it is are the pregame activities we observe until the game starts.

As I said...read the article...

Quote:A few hours later, though, some conservative people who are not familiar with all of the stuff I’ve written about this sort of thing over the years saw it and believed that I was denigrating the American Flag and claiming that the Braves were conducting a political propaganda exercise on Friday night. By mid-morning that began to snowball and since then I’ve been flooded with literally thousands of people calling me a commie, saying my tweet was treasonous and telling me that if I don’t like this country I can get the hell out right now. One person said I should be burned at the stake. Another said I should be hanged. One guy even told me he hopes I get cancer.

Much to do about nothing...and I agree somewhat with his slant for another reason.... There was a huge gas station in a town close to me that had a 50ft flag flying over it. I often wondered if they were really that patriotic or simply using it as an advertising ploy. People would come from all around to get their picture taken on a spot of concrete perfectly positioned so it showed the flag in the background. Im sure it was good for business also.
