AAC needs to add Lacrosse
(04-17-2017 07:27 AM)KnightLight Wrote:  Many AAC schools (like UCF), have Club Lacrosse teams which is almost the same as having a varsity sports program (diehards plus family and friends watch) but without 95% of the costs needed for another non revenue sport.

Also, add in Title IX implications, if a men's varsity sport is added, another women's varsity sport would have to be added as well.

Same for other popular club sports like Ice Hockey. There is a reason most are and will stay Club Sports and never become a full fledged varsity sport.

My $40,000,000 number above includes dollars to endow a female sport that would need to be added

We have a D1 women's team at UC, but I honestly don't know who else sponsors the sport in the AAC. Does anyone?

ECU, UConn, Cincinnati, and Temple
Plus Vanerbilt and Florida who are in the SEC and they do not sponsor.

Where else will we spend all that P6 money this conference has been trucking in?

We treat lacrosse pretty seriously.
The men could help with an affiliation as they are currently playing in the CAA.

The women have won 8 straight A10 championships and currently have a 50 straight A10 win streak.

Did Ricky start this thread? He loved him some lacrosse. Only guy at Tulsa I knew that liked it. He was from Connecticut so that probably had something to do with it.

The idea that Tulane should somehow add Lacrosse because it has a lot of preppy northeastern students and therefore it is a "natural" fit is one of the dumbest arguments we routinely hear on the Tulane forums.

It's idiotic.

Lax will cost money. Even under the most optimistic circumstances, it cannot make money. Soccer is way more popular (and with a higher growth rate) than Lax, even among the traditional Lax demographic (and many others). It cannot generate revenue. So why would Lax ever generate revenue.

It's true that more and more schools are adding Lax, but those are P5's with so much money to burn they can't find enough matchsticks.

Football. Basketball. Maybe Baseball. Thats all that matters. Everything else is costly window dressing. You shouldn't spend more on window dressing than you have to in order to be able to sell the real products.

In the 80's Umass had great men's lacrosse teams with many all 'mericans. I think they called them Garber's Gorillas (after the name of the coach).

You are absolutely right! Every single women's and most men's programs (coaches, trainers, scholarships, travel, lodging, academic support) are black holes where money gets consumed in mass amounts and nobody seems to care.

Very good men's rugby. I think back to back national champions a couple seasons ago.

ECU had very good rugby itself, but changes brought down from USA rugby killed us. We used to be in a "conference" with Wake, NCSU, UNC, Duke, App (AHO), UNCW, UNCG, Elon, and a few other state schools. When USA rugby decided that conferences should be "more like their NCAA counterparts" it tore ECU up. The ACC schools joined the ACRC and up a division. This put ECU as a Southern Indy for a season. The dust still hasn't really settled, though we have gotten a conf championship out of it once we hit the SRC.
