Not many surprises, Cortez Chase Ervin looks like a real player at wide receiver. He'll be getting plenty of PT.

Count me as squarely in the "wait and see" camp regarding LaRussa and Arnold. Right now I'd feel a lot better if they were back ups, not potential starters, but, we'll see. They are just not big enough.

Schekells will not play QB at ODU, however at his size he could make a descent tight end.

Saw a few nice plays, little more deception and creativity.

Other thoughts?

It seems that Vaughn tore his ACL again yesterday. Big loss. Ellison looked good on the highlights.

Millers article doesn't confirm it's an ACL. He quotes Wilder saying he'll have an mri and they are hoping for the best.

Ellison will be a star player for us. Arnold looked good for the most part, LaRussa looked pretty good as well with limited reps. Still wait-and-see as to who will be the starter at qb.

RE: Spring Game take aways
To me if there was a game next week LaRussa would get the start but Arnold isnt far behind. LaRussa looked to move freely in the pocket. I dont recall if he was sacked today. I liked the smooth hand offs BL handled and got his guys in the right position when the play was signaled in with a couple check down plays. Arnold was called sacked 6 time during the game but he also played the whole game as LaRussa sat out the second half. Arnold had some issues with a few hand offs during the game but had a couple nice deep balls. Schekells 18 reminded me of Bentley, balls in the ground and running around with cinder blocks tied to his feet.

With Arnold, Hoy and LaRussa I like the fact that come summer we're going to have 3 qbs with similar styles of play.

Did they scale back the spring game activities? I came strait to the game from a meeting and was looking for some type of food and beverages outside the stadium but didn't find either 15min before kickoff. Years past there were food trucks and beer vendors. I didnt find them this year.

Yeah not sure if you guys saw after quarterback #18's last series he walked off the field and was beating himself up. It looked like he was crying. Ron Whitcomb rushed over to him and started comfort coaching him. I really understood the frustration I remember when I first started doing college math. Calculus kick my butt no matter how much I practiced, I never got it and barely passed. I doubt #18 will play QB. Don't we still have like 3 QB coming this summer?

RE: Spring Game take aways
1. I thougt LaRussa played with confidence, took care of the ball and just plain looked great. I would be happy to see him be our starter.

2. Ellington will see a lot of playing time this year. He is a gamer.

3. They opened with Cox and Lawry in the backfield with LaRussa -- Cox on one side of LaRussa and Lawry on the other. I loved it. That formation is full of possibilities -- all good.

4. Nijee Cox had a great day. I hope Vaughn is ok, but Cox looks up to the task.

5. I believe it was Jordan Young that had what I considered to be the hit of the day.

6. T J Storment is a horse. He should be on the field a lot.

7. Kesean Strong made a great catch. Would be good to see him getting playing time at WR.

8. Drayton Arnold got a ton of reps (almost all the second half) and looked pretty good all day. My personal observation was that LaRussa seemed more poised, confident and in control, but I also saw a lot to like in Arnold.

9. Kirtley made the first field goal of the day. It was good to see him back and in form. Davis continues to show us a really strong leg, but he did miss a game winning field goal attempt at the end of the game that resulted in the 34-33 final score.

10. Cate looked ok punting, but not spectacular. We should be ok in special teams.

11. In general, I normally feel the defense appears to be ahead of the offense in the spring game. Kind of interesting. Today I thought the offense was ahead of the defense. All in all, I came away encouraged, but I tell you, every time I look at the schedule, it just looks tougher. I think we will be good, but I see a lot of games where we will be pushed to get the win.

Wow you guys are really something. The Qb #18 suffered a concussion and a severe stinger/sprain on his left shoulder. MRI Pending from what i've been told.

Cox may still be behind Vandy transfer.

Very true, but Cox should push him, and it's nice to know we have some depth there despite Vaughn's possible knee injury.

I guess we should also note that we can anticipate Hoy pushing to start at QB. If he is as good as we hope, it's nice to know we also have some actual depth at QB, our biggest question mark position this year with DW graduating.

Cox looked more than capable. Is the Vandy transfer even here yet? Don't recall seeing him play
I don't get to see to many other teams, especially P-5 teams, but our corners and linebackers still seem undersized to me. Is this accurate or are they about what we should expect at our level?

Im guessing he is finishing up his studies at Vandy. Semester is almost over.

I dont believe our players are all that small, but our lunebackers are really ylung as well. It might be another year or 2 before they really bulk up.

RE: Spring Game take aways
Interesting reading everyone's comments. Couple things I took away:

1. Arnold struggled IMO. He didn't work through his progressions quickly enough and took too many sacks. He missed a couple throws to wide open receivers as well as several other miscues. I think Drayton has all the tools and just needs time. I don't think he's ready right now.

2. LaRussa looked confident and in rhythm. He made one really poor throw on the deep ball to Duhart. He under threw the pass and it should have been picked off. Jonathan made a fantastic play.

3. I really like Isaac Weaver. He was the left tackle on the Blue squad and he is going to be a stud. He really moves his feet well for being 6'7. Going head-to-head with Ximines is a tough assignment and he held his own. We needed someone to step up in place of Butler and I think he's going to help fill a crucial role on our line. Davison also played well. The White line was young and it showed. They struggled IMO.

4. I was watching the linebackers closely. Lots of young, talented guys there. Jordan Young stood out from the freshman. Marvin Branch played really well too. I think he's going to get a lot of playing time this year.

5. Our safeties and defensive backs are so much better than they were three years ago. We have depth and talent. Last year's team was solid against the pass. They will be better this year.

6. We have some really good freshmen receivers. Ellison, McCluney and Cortez Ervin are the future. Not sure how much playing time they will get this year but they showcased their potential. All three have speed and height.
