Football recruiting rules changes
If you are a G5 school, most of these are really bad. Final vote is later this month.

1. Satellite camps are dead. Camps may only be held on your own campus. In addition the time period in which you can hold a camp is limited to a single day in June and a Single day in July.

2. Coaches are now banned from signing more than 25 kids in a recruiting class.

3. Camps must now include educational sessions for athletes covering gambling, drug abuse, agent restrictions, and general eligibility requirements.

4. FBS schools will be permitted to hire a 10th Full time Assistant coach beginning January of 2018.

5. Schools cannot hire people with an existing relationship with a recruited student athlete until 2 years after the player signs. Similar rule in basketball.

6. Schools can no longer hold two practices over the same day. To compensate, Fall Camps will begin a week earlier.

7. Juniors may now take official visits between April and June of their Junior Year only. A camp cannot be used as an official visit.

8. Early signing period is approved for High School Players. It will be in December over the same 3 day Window that Junior College players can sign. If they do not sign within those 3 days, they must wait till February.

RE: Football recruiting rules changes
the big takeaway from this is the Dec signing period, now, both the players and programs have more protection, this should go a long way to stopping players from flipping weeks, or even days before the Feb signing day, really good news for the G5 programs!!

Wonder if GS can have both Statesboro and Savannah camps.

2. Coaches are now banned from signing more than 25 kids in a recruiting class.

Usually not a problem and actually thought that was the limit now with certain exceptions (guess all those different shirt colors may no longer be allowed).

3. Camps must now include educational sessions for athletes covering gambling, drug abuse, agent restrictions, and general eligibility requirements.

4. FBS schools will be permitted to hire a 10th Full time Assistant coach beginning January of 2018.

Good news if you can afford it.

5. Schools cannot hire people with an existing relationship with a recruited student athlete until 2 years after the player signs. Similar rule in basketball.

Does this include coaches? Cause a lot of coaches have relationships with recruits and then switch jobs and try to bring those recruits to their new school. I understand the intent of the rule, but it sounds vague here (probably missing all the legalize)

6. Schools can no longer hold two practices over the same day. To compensate, Fall Camps will begin a week earlier.

Not sure how I feel. This rule will really make having an IPF a huge advantage. GS better start planning.

7. Juniors may now take official visits between April and June of their Junior Year only. A camp cannot be used as an official visit.

ok, not sure how this affects us. Someone please tell me if this is bad or just meh.

This could be good or bad. I'm hoping this is a good thing overall and allows G5 schools to either sign players before they flip to P5 schools and/or allow the G5 school more time to refocus on other recruits after a recruit has flipped.

No to Savannah. only can hold camps where you practice and play.

All seems pretty good to me. Seems to try to get rid of all the Power 5 shenanigans.

none of these should be a problem for App, and like I said, having a Dec signing day will be huge for G5 schools. Its a hell of lot better to find out the true intentions of a recruit in early Dec, than to find out 2 days before signing day in Feb.

Actually, the loss of satellite camps will have some impact on our recruiting as we have discovered some pretty good ones this way.

Loss of Satellite camps could cripple several G5 programs. That's how many of the top players at this level get found by our coaches. They show up at Alabama's camp thinking they are a top player, and Bama says no, but App's got a coach there and he offers.

Having only camps on your campus means prospects have to come to you, and the limited amp dates means they have to choose between a G5 camp or an SEC camp. We all know which camp they'll pick.

Wasn't the satellite camp thing already voted down by the FBS even with the Sun Belt siding against the camps? Why is it going to pass now?

I could see the 10th coach rule affecting G5s, but maybe not a lot. Raising caps on things you can buy will usually affect smaller-budget programs more

The rest of them, meh.

Satellite camp was originally voted down by the FBS conferences, but it caused a crap ton of drama because a lot of schools AD's voted the issue down without consulting their own football teams who used them regularly. NCAA board refused to certify the decision and the camps stayed.

Texas State's AD was the one who voted down the camps for the Sun Belt, and it caused a ton of drama over here because he went against his own football coach to do it. There were some angry emails/texts shared between school officials in the league that week.

I think the loss of the Satellite camps will have a minimal effect, atleast for App, technology has made it so easy to know/find these kids, ya, its good to travel to Alabama and see a kid from Birmingham in person, and occasionally your find a hidden gem, but I bet our staff already has a really good idea on who they are after in a 4 or 5 state radius, not a lot of surprises out there, just my uneducated opinion.

Will have a pretty significant impact for us. We can't really expect kids to come in to our camp, an coaches don't usually offer without seeing them at a camp.

RE: Football recruiting rules changes
Next can of worms that this might uncork is that kid who commits early to University X and Coach Y, and Coach Y leaves (or is canned) prior to the start of the season.

Just moves the drama to a different vector.

I would think the high profile commits may stave off early committing as it also ends one thing some of what athletes seek.

Attention and being in the public eye.

RE: Football recruiting rules changes
All of these different proposals will not really handicap a P5 and it remains to be seen if they help schools on our level or not. I think the most interesting thing being discussed is capping the total staff size. Apparently some schools like Alabama have something like 90 people in non-coaching football staff roles such as analysts. While technically they are not on the field coaching the NCAA is saying what some of these employees are doing are things coaches should be doing. In fact at programs our size that's exactly the case with our coaches often having more off the field responsibilities than those at P5's. Capping non-coaching staff sizes would certainly go a long way to leveling the playing field.
