RE: A new Key Arena
Is SU looking at staying at Key for the future? I know they played some games on campus this year. Will they keep splitting them?

They signed a new lease with Key Arena this year and also apparently want to play in the new NBA arena. New Key Arena or entirely new arena, they want to play in it. Hiw much they will keep splitting home games with the Connolly Complex, I dont know. But I hope they only use it for non-D1 opponents and I guess senior night. They dont even have permanent banners or retired numbers, other WAC schools banners, etc in Key Arena. The Storm do though.

RE: A new Key Arena
Three options for new arena or new Key Arena right now:

Full article

Sonics Arena

Location: 1st Ave S/S Massachusetts St/S Holgate St, SoDo
Estimated Cost: $550 million
Estimated Size: 700,000 sq ft.
Seating Capacity: 18,500 (basketball), 17,500 (hockey), 19,000 (concerts), can expand up to 2,000 additional
Additional Feature: On-site training facility

Seattle U has specifically talked to this group about also playing here.

"Investor Chris Hansen's group - including former Sonics player and executive Wally Walker, retail empire magnates Erik and Pete Nordstrom, and Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Russell Wilson - offered in October 2016 to fully finance the project privately in exchange for an exemption on admission taxes and a reduction of the business & occupation taxes charged on revenue made outside of Seattle. The group seeks a two-block vacation of S Occidental Avenue that bisects the arena site"

New Arena at Seattle Center
Location: 305 Harrison Street, Lower Queen Anne/Uptown
Estimated Cost*: $564 million
Estimated Size: 660,000 sq ft.
Seating Capacity: 18,350 (basketball), 17,100 (hockey), 19,100 (concerts)

"
Arena management and consultancy Oak View Group - created and headed by former NBA executive, former NHL executive, and former president of AEG Tim Leiweke, and music industry artist mogul Irving Azoff - has proposed a renovation of the existing KeyArena that would dig down 15 feet to expand the footprint of the arena and more than double the existing square footage."

Seattle Coliseum
Location: 305 Harrison Street, Lower Queen Anne/Uptown
Estimated Cost*: $520 million
Estimated Size: 600,000 sq ft.
Seating Capacity: 18,113 (basketball), 17,120 (hockey), 19,202 (concerts)

"Anschutz Entertainment Group, the world's largest developer and manager of arenas, has partnered with real estate firm Hudson Pacific Properties and a number of local firms to form Seattle Partners. They have proposed a renovation of KeyArena that retains the roof and building while expanding the southern wall to increase the footprint. This would allow for more seating and a centering of the ice rink"

Isn't it weird how they are planning this without there being a guarantee there will be a NBA team there? Or are these plans contingent on that happening?

It would be to attract an NBA and NHL team. The NHL is at an odd 31 and without a question would expand with a 32nd team there.

NBA maybe expand if Seattle had an arena, but not as likely to be immediate.

RE: A new Key Arena
Quote:Multiple NBA and NHL executives are backing the renovation of KeyArena at Seattle Center, according to new documents to be released Monday by the City of Seattle.
That’s just one of the takeaways from the voluminous bids submitted to the city by the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) and Oak View Group (OVG) to rebuild the complex on the western edge of the campus.
The hundreds of pages of documents also lay out plans for $250 million in public financing by one of the groups, and transportation mitigation ideas as well.

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss wrote to Murray in a letter dated April 12 in which she expressed her support for AEG to be picked as a partner for redeveloping the “Seattle Coliseum," as the bid describes the project. Buss said in part, “you will be thrilled with them as a partner in your city.”
The Los Angeles-based AEG, as the bid shows, has teamed up with Los Angeles-based Hudson Pacific Properties and has called themselves “Seattle Partners” in the proposal. But the letters of recommendation only specifically cite AEG, and much of the proposal appears to have been written before Hudson joined the effort.
The presidents of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, and San Antonio Spurs all wrote letters to Seattle in support for AEG.

I think both the NHL and NBA want an arena built before they affirm that they will expand to Seattle

Yep. But once one is, 99% chance NHL expands and plays in Key Arena until new one is built. NBA not as fast, but with there actually being a city worth expanding into, I bet theyd expand to 32 with Seattle and Vegas/Louisville/KC/etc within a decade

RE: A new Key Arena
Breaking down and comparing SoDo Arena or new Key Arena, future home of Seattle U basketball. Very informative with numbers and info, organized nicely, for those interested. Published from Sonics Arena, who want to build downtown with no public financing.

Personally I wish theyd build it in SoDo, and renovate Key Arena into a smaller size arena for Seattle U, concerts, and the WNBAs Storm if they want to keep playing here

AEG & Hudson Pacific withdraw their joint offer to remodel Key Arena. Down to two now.

RE: A new Key Arena
City of Seattle to enter "exclusive negotiations with Oak View group."

So unless they cant reach a deal, the new Seattle U/NBA/NHL arena will be a complete remodel of Key Arena, not a downtown SODO arena like Chris Hansen wants for his NBA team. Wonder if he would even still own a team that plays there. Im all for Ballmer and the Clippers though.

For the Redhawks, that would mean 2-3 years playing at the 999 seat Connolly Complex

RE: A new Key Arena
OVG has said it could possibly take anywhere from 2-5 years pending how smooth the process takes.

Seattle U and the Storm will more than likely not be getting as sweet of a deal when the "new" Key Arena is finished. They might not even be asked back b/c part of this remodel is to get the shows that are to small for the Clink and take away shows from Tacoma/Kent/Everett/ and be the epicenter for all entertainment.

If the Storm and SU mens team gets asked back it will be higher rent and they will be the last options when it comes to dates.

I hope that isn't the case but I can see this happening pretty easily.

Dave Grosby has said SU is in on every arena proposal there is in Seattle. But we will see. I dont see any downside to the arena builders by letting SU play there for rent though. I think SU will be fine and once an arena is built, they will move in. Much like LIU-B (Nets) for mid majors.

7 of the 11 Seattle mayoral canidates support the new arena being in SoDo, not the planned new Key Arena. 2 of the 11 support Key, 1 in Tuckwila (if this happened SU would stay in Key or Connolly) and 1 is noncommittal.

What is the advantage of having it SoDo?

Nothing for SU, but a way better location, access. Not in a residential neighborhood like Key, but in the arena district over empty lots already owned by the SoDo group.

Staples in right near a residential area and they are home to 2 NBA teams, a NHL team, and a WNBA team, so why is that really an issue for people.

Not every residential area is the same. You'd just have to try driving into Key Arena and the SoDo stadiums on a week day and see what you'd prefer I guess. Theres a reason majority of the city seems to want it at SoDo.

SoDo is immediately right at the end of I90 and the I5 interchange. Key Arena means all the traffic from the eastside (I90) adding into the already-present I5 traffic, then driving through city streets already full of daily congestion

RE: A new Key Arena
SeattleU will be forced to play on campus where that gym holds only 999. The OVG they are they ppl bring the NHL to Seattle and remodeling the Key has made it known they don't plan on having SU as a tenant at the refurbished Key. The interesting part in this SU athletics from the AD to the MBB coaches seem to think they are going back once the Key is finished. One side isn't telling the truth.
